Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough traveled to Austin in response to proposed changes to district maps.

Testifies against proposal to split up communities into other counties

The Texas Legislature is in special session currently addressing the decennial census redistricting process. Proposed maps already released of Texas Senate districts removes much of the county from one senate district and adds two more new districts. Keough is firmly against such changes to the lines.

“With our population at 620,000 people and the ideal senate district being 940,000. I went to Austin today to testify against these proposed changes and asked the Senate to consider keeping Montgomery County wholly contained within one district, so our communities are not split with representation and dragged into districts that include populations throughout Harris County and as far away as San Antonio,” said Keough.

While Montgomery County will still have to share the senate district with another contiguous county - Harris County - Keough is more concerned with splitting up into a different senate district.

“Placing Montgomery County into one district will continue to give our county the majority makeup of the senate district like we have had for several decades,” said Keough. “The proposal now ends this practice and attempts to divide us in a way that dilutes the conservative composition of the county.”

Keough encourages interested parties to leave a comment with the Senate Redistricting Committee at https://senate.texas.gov/redistrictingcomment/.
