THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Grand Oaks Grizzlies basketball team has started off the pre-season right, with three wins and only one loss. It’s early to tell but this team seems solid and unique in the fact that they constantly put pressure on the ball, almost every possession. College Station had a bit of trouble with this later in the game but their aggression in the first quarter gave them a slight lead.

Grand Oaks came out playing it safe as they felt out the College Station Cougars offense and defense. It was a slow first quarter but the Cougars were able to drain a couple of 3-pointers which gave them the slight lead over the Grizzlies. Although the 3 pointers gave the Cougars the lead, the Grizzlies were able to tear into their defense and put some points on the board by driving down the middle and challenging the center. The Grizzlies go into the second quarter down by two points but their defense was just getting warmed up.

As the second quarter began, the Grizzlies put the pressure on the Cougars which made them struggle at the other end of the court. Grand Oaks took advantage of this and with a couple of drives in the paint were able to take the lead from College Station. With the lead, the Grizzlies overwhelmed the Cougars and challenged the inbound as well as the drives, sometimes doubling up on the ball. This forced mistakes on College Station as they tried to keep possession of the ball but ended up turning it over. The hard pressure worked for Grand Oaks as they took the lead 30-18 at the half.

In the 3rd, Grand Oaks locked down the College Station defense creating many turnovers and closing off the passing lanes by double teaming the ball. The Cougars seemed overwhelmed as they made their way to the basket and with the frustration made many errors trying to get points on the board. This continued into the 4th quarter where Grand Oaks extended their lead and stopping the College Station offense. Towards the end, College Station heated up and drained a couple of 3-pointers which gave them a chance to come back. When the Grizzlies saw this, they stepped on the gas and also heated up, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on them, sometimes forcing the foul and making many 3-point possessions.

For the beginning of the season, the Grand Oaks Grizzlies played like a well-oiled machine. They all moved as one and seemed to know where every one was going to be at all times. This gives them the advantage by being able to choose from multiple targets. Grand Oaks wins their 4th against College Station, 68 to 54. They are set to face Tomball Memorial next.
