Holcomb Family YMCA Hosted Community Event to Commemorate Grand Opening
SPRING, TX -- The Holcomb Family YMCA hosted a grand opening event for the community to experience the Y’s one-of-a-kind, innovative indoor and outdoor purpose-driven facility and programs on Saturday, Dec. 11. The Holcomb Family YMCA is situated on the shores of the beautiful 100-acre Lake Holcomb on Imperial Promenade Drive, near Highway 99/Grand Parkway in the Falls at Imperial Oaks Development, located in Spring, Texas.
“We are thrilled to announce the opening of the Holcomb Family YMCA. The facility, developed to impact everyone in the community, is unlike any other YMCA in Houston and a first within the association,” said Stephen Ives, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Houston. “We are pioneering an innovative and inclusive space that seeks to provide the community with access to resources and opportunities to reconnect, learn, thrive and build new relationships.”
The highly anticipated Holcomb YMCA Phase One Project consists of a unique and innovative indoor and outdoor design that is open, welcoming and adaptable in all seasons and circumstances. Featured amenities include a 12,000-square-foot pavilion with turf and multi-purpose courts for basketball, pickleball and other sports. Additionally, there is an outdoor fitness center with workout space for group exercise and other workouts as well as large multi-purpose sports fields for soccer, lacrosse, camps, and additional programs designed to inspire youth to thrive. The Holcomb YMCA equips members with a wide variety of unique and functional sports training equipment. They also offer Escape, a new digital training solution that provides exercise videos and workouts designed for any level. Further, there are community areas nestled within the existing nature that feature picnic tables, a sloped lawn for seating, an area for food trucks and opportunities for social gathering.
Center features for members include: Group EX, soccer clinics, youth engagement opportunities and martial arts. Personal training and small group training will start in late January 2022.
“We are excited for the expansion of services to the greater Spring community with this location. The YMCA of Greater Houston was founded 135 years ago as a place where all people could find hope, fellowship and healing. By bringing together people from different backgrounds, perspectives and generations, we ensure that all have access to the opportunities, relationships and resources necessary to learn, grow and thrive. This Holcomb Family YMCA will be dedicated to this purpose and hopes to bring value to the Falls at Imperial Oaks residents and surrounding communities,” said Chris Butsch, District Executive Director.
The expansion of YMCA services to the Spring community was the result of a donation of 10.2 acres of land valued at over $3 million by developers Jim Holcomb, Dick Weekley and David Weekley. In addition to the land, the Holcomb and Weekley families donated $3 million toward the construction of Phase One of the project. The YMCA must raise additional funds to support future buildings for the project and is in the preliminary stages of a capital campaign.
“The pandemic certainly made us realize how much we value being part of a community,” said Tiger Lyon, Associate and Architect at Gensler Houston. “Over the past year and a half, the Holcomb Family YMCA team was focused on designing a new facility that would aid in bringing their members back together in a safe and meaningful way. Repurposing shipping containers allowed us to help the YMCA become operational and more flexible, and we are extremely excited to help bring their vision to life.”
The global design firm Gensler’s Houston office serves as the lead master plan/urban design architect, base building and interiors architect. Project team includes: Civil and structural engineering, Walter P. Moore; Landscape, SWA; and Teliosm mechanical, electrical and plumbing.
