THE WOODLANDS, TX – On Saturday evening, March 5, The John Cooper School hosted their 2022 Bohemian Dragon Gala and fundraiser at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center. This annual gala is a longstanding school tradition that dates back to 1989, a year after the school was first founded.

Previous gala themes have included “A Night On The Orient Express,” “Follow The Yellow Brick Road,” Monte Carlo Magic,” and “School of Rock.” This year’s theme was called “Bohemian Dragon” with attendees reveling in floral, eclectic designs and tastes. Guests were given beautifully crafted bohemian floral garland headpieces, John Cooper School goodie bags, bracelets, and stylish fedora straw hats to help usher in the evening’s festivities.

Hundreds of guests made this gala an evening to remember. One of the special highlights of this year’s gala was the recognition and honoring of retiring Head of School, Michael Maher, who served John Cooper admirably for the last 22 years. He will be replaced by Head of School-Elect, Stephen Popp effective July 1, 2022. Video clips during the gala showed various people from John Cooper offering notes of praise for Michael’s excellent role as Head of School. There was also a wall of memories with dozens of pictures of Michael taken over the span of his 22 year term as well as a large art piece that allowed people to write notes of thanks to Michael. It was an endearing program to honor a long serving member of the John Cooper community.

The evening was also a great time of fundraising with an impressive array of auction items that included bids on hard to get tickets for concerts like Katy Perry, the CMA Music Festival, the Bottlerock Festival in NAPA Valley, The Eagles, Brandi Carlile and Garth Brooks. Vacation excursions allowed guests to bid on trips to the Bahamas, Florida and Barbados. Other items that were for bid included tickets to Houston Rodeo, Meet and Greets with Dude Perfect, rare special small batch bourbon as well as other wonderful gift packages.

Two of the more interesting local auction items was bids on allowing a John Cooper student to act as Head of School for a day and bids on a cute rescue puppy.

The fundraising was a success and the evening was a wonderful Bohemian symphony of fun. From the cool face painting, live band and acrobats to the decor and cuisine, The John Cooper School hosted one of the most entertaining galas in The Woodlands this year.
