HS Football: College Park Wins District Opener Against Grand Oaks
THE WOODLANDS, TX -- College Park and Grand Oaks met up at Woodforest Friday night for their opening 13-6A district match up. College Park is trying to get a win after coming off of a loss from Klein Cain. Grand Oaks is trying to keep their streak going after last week’s win over Dobie.
In the first quarter College Park came out swinging but was stopped short of the goal line by Grand Oaks. They settle on a field goal which quickly put points up on the board. During the short kick off, Grand Oaks fumbled the ball which was recovered by College Park. This started their collapse.
Kam Montgomery for College Park would run a couple of plays and ultimately hand it off to Carter Deering for a touchdown. College Park found themselves up 10 points in the beginning of the second quarter.
Defensive back Robert Stringer would intercept the ball changing the momentum for the Grand Oaks Grizzlies. The celebration was short lived as the College Park Cavaliers stopped the attacks from Grand Oaks.
On the turnover College Park would have the ball and running back Eugene Burnett would run it in for another 6 points making the score, 17-7.
On the other side of the ball, Grand Oaks couldn’t get anything together. Brandon High was on the sidelines so quarterback Christian Nunley had to resort to his arm to make plays.
During two Grand Oaks punt attempts the ball was mishandled which gave College Park the possession. After a couple more touchdowns College Park would close out Grand Oaks, 42-14.
Although Grand Oaks suffered many errors, they were able to make plays in the fourth quarter in an attempt to chip away at the College Park lead. Unfortunately, time wasn’t on their side and just as they began to get in a groove the game ended.
Next week, College Park is set to face Cleveland on the road and Grand Oaks will host Caney Creek.
