College Park Stunned At Home By Cy-Fair In A Thrilling Double Overtime Upset

THE WOODLANDS – It’s only Week 2 of the 2026 season, and we’ve already seen back-to-back incredible Friday night games at Woodforest Bank Stadium. Unfortunately, these games haven’t favored the home team, as no home team has won at Woodforest this season. Oak Ridge and The Woodlands both lost, and now the College Park Cavaliers fall to the Cy-Fair Bobcats 53-45 in an unprecedented upset.

The Cavaliers were heavy favorites coming into this game, and no one could’ve foreseen the double-overtime thriller it would become. This game had absolutely everything, from big plays to game-defining mistakes, and it was a rollercoaster for all four quarters.

Heading into this game, we knew the College Park Cavaliers were good, but we wanted to see more after some lackluster performances against Iowa Colony in Week 1. There were still several questions about this Cavalier team, especially in the passing game, with several miscues throughout Week 1. The rushing game was not in question, but if teams stacked the box, how would the Cavaliers handle it?

1^st Half: A Slow Start Gives Way To Special Teams Chaos

The game didn’t start off hot for either team; after the first couple of drives, College Park led 7-0, with defense being key for both teams. That lone score came from a long TD run by RB Duke Stephens, which saw him evade multiple defenders on his way to the end zone. QB Camden Hughes struggled early, getting lots of pressure on pass attempts and missing some key throws that stalled drives early. Cy-Fair’s QB Sean Riegler was in a similar spot, having to run and dodge multiple Cavalier defenders just to get throws off, though he was somehow escaping (that’s important for later). Hughes then started hitting some good throws, finding WR Julian Cromartie on a deep 40+ yard strike that Cromartie walked into the end zone with, putting the lead at 14-0.

At this point, it felt like College Park was finally going to step on the gas, but Cy-Fair wasn’t going down without a fight. Reigler came alive on this drive, leading a scoring drive that saw him hit WR Adam Lockhart in the end zone after a long catch by WR Kaden Lewis, bringing the score to 14-7. What happened next can only be described as a special teams meltdown. On the kickoff, the ball was knocked out of returner Tyler Williams’ hands, and Cy-Fair recovered the fumble in the red zone, setting up another drive. Reigler made the Cavaliers pay quickly, throwing a strike to Julius Brown II for a TD, tying the game at 14-14 in a matter of minutes.

On the next kickoff, Brian Snodgrass returned the ball, but it was stripped from his hands by a Cy-Fair defender and returned to the red zone again, setting up another drive for the Bobcats. Luckily, the tired defense held strong, forcing the Bobcats to kick a FG, but they still gave them the lead, 17-14. Just like that, the momentum of this game was flipped upside down, and, of all things, special teams blunders were to blame. The Cavaliers finally got the ball back, but with little time before the half, nothing happened, and we now head into the 2nd half, where things get a little hairy.

2^nd Half: Both Teams Come Out Firing

The 1st half of this game felt like a defensive struggle, but the 2nd half quickly turned into a barnburner. Cy-Fair didn’t take their foot off the gas to start, as Riegler hit WR Kevin Ferrygood on a deep pass that Ferrygood took to the house, putting the Bobcats up 24-14 on the 1st drive. The Cavaliers didn’t do much on offense, but the defense came up big, with DE RJ Wyms tipping the ball up for Lynden Finger to catch and return it all the way for a big defensive TD, bringing the game back within reach at 24-21. The Cavaliers then stopped the Bobcats again, leading to RB Antonio Booker scoring the go-ahead TD on a speedy 70+ yard run. Booker’s impressive run finally gave some life back to the Cavaliers, as they now led 28-24.

Cy-Fair started to feel the heat as the Cavalier defense held strong and didn’t let anything slip by. The Cavaliers then mounted a solid drive on offense, but an intentional grounding by Hughes left them with only a field goal, extending the lead to 31-24. Despite some good showings on defense, the one weakness for College Park all night was the defensive backs, and it popped up again on the next drive. Cy-Fair somehow overcame the momentum the Cavaliers had, with Steigler hitting Ferrygood on a pass that was so wide open it didn’t even look like a real play. Ferrygood easily scored the game-tying TD with just seconds left in the 3rd quarter, and now the pressure was back on College Park.

Booker then returned on offense, getting the Cavaliers to the red zone with some excellent runs to start the 4^th quarter. Hughes then hit Cromartie in the end zone for his 2^nd TD of the night, snatching the lead right back from the Bobcats. The next 2 drives didn’t amount to much, but penalties cost them chances to put this game away: a holding call killed a solid drive, and an unsportsmanlike penalty set Cy-Fair up well on the next drive. Steigler took advantage of the field position, throwing all over the field and getting the offense into the red zone again with some wide-open looks. On 4^th and 5, the poor defensive back play cost the Cavaliers again, with Brown II being wide open in the end zone, allowing the Bobcats to tie it up at 38-38.

The ensuing drives didn’t see any more scoring, but one development was that Hughes was hit again by injuries. He had been knocked down a couple of times during this game, forcing him to leave the game multiple times and putting his health in question. The final drives of regulation weren’t much, aside from College Park’s defense holding off a field goal after a blocked punt could’ve set up a short field. We now headed into overtime, with it feeling like the Cavaliers were in serious trouble. The game was set to be a high-scoring one, as that 38-38 score was certainly going to go up.

Overtime: Make It A Double

Chaos overtime began when College Park got the ball first at the 25-yard line. Hughes was sidelined, leaving Brian Snodgrass to step in at QB, though he ran Wildcat 90% of the time. Snodgrass ran well, getting the Cavaliers within the 5-yard line before punching it in to take a 45-38 lead with Cy-Fair’s possession still to come. The Bobcats answered right back, with Steigler hitting a wide-open Noah Williams in the middle of the field for a 2nd overtime-forcing TD, making it 45-45.

2OT started with Cy-Fair having possession, and this time they had to go for 2-point conversions if they scored, so this was probably where it ended. Reigler hit some more wide-open throws before putting the exclamation point on this game with a 15-yard rushing TD that put the Bobcats ahead. Now came the 2-point conversion, which didn’t even look hard for the Bobcats, as they were able to get another man wide open over the middle to score and put the game at 53-45. College Park now had to score and get 2 without a QB, as Hughes was still out, even though he was still dressed out and had his helmet on the sideline. This forced Snodgrass to try to take it into his own hands with Cy-Fair not giving him any running room. It all came down to a 4th-and-goal, where Hughes now returned, despite not being good to go before, to try to keep the game alive. He hit Booker on a pass in the flats, but unlike last season, Booker was tackled well short of the end zone, ending the game with Cy-Fair emerging as the victors, 53-45.

Final Thoughts:

That was one of the longest games we’ve ever been to, and it was certainly an entertaining bout. The Cavaliers drop one in heartbreaking fashion to a Cy-Fair team that many thought would be crushed. The Bobcats stepped up the challenge and got the upset on the backs of some incredible performances, especially from their QB Sean Reigler, who is easily the MVP of this game.

The rushing attack was certainly challenged in this one. Despite some long runs, the Cavaliers didn’t get many rushing yards, and big splash plays kept them afloat. Outside of one drive early in the game, the passing attack was off and unorganized, something we didn’t see from them last season. Hughes getting hurt all game didn’t help, and his offensive line didn’t protect him well either. Hughes was under constant pressure, and it felt like something needed to be done up front if the Cavaliers want any shot at achieving this season. If they can unlock the passing game they had last year and actually get the ball to Cromartie, then we might see some of that old spark that made them special last season.

The defense was a mixed bag. Up front, this Cavalier defense is super solid, with Wyms and Richard being terrors on the outside and the LB core key run-stoppers. The problem is the defensive back situation. We don’t really know what happened, but Cy-Fair seemed to have a man wide open on every pass play, and that just cannot happen if you want to win football games. The defensive playcalling was mind-bogglingly bad. Sometimes DBs wouldn’t get beat, but they just weren't even on the right guy. That has to be fixed, especially when you play a team next week in CE King that has one of the best high school WR recruits in the country.

Overall, while there are certainly some brilliant flashes from this Cavalier team, they haven't shown us what made them special last season in these first few weeks, and they still have some things to improve moving forward. They aren’t a bad team by any means, but when your expectations are very high coming into this season, things can’t regress even a little bit. We’ll see how they do next week against CE King, as a win there could be huge for getting the Cavaliers back on track.
