Entries closed for first women's major of the year
THE WOODLANDS, TX - Entries have closed for the first women’s major of the year, with the world’s top 20 players and 29 major champions set to compete at The Chevron Championship taking place next week, April 20-23, at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands.
Final two championship invitations announced, and Zoe Campos claims sixth amateur exemption spot
The star-studded field includes 42 of the top-50 players on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, 58 LPGA winners who have won a combined total of 247 titles, 31 Solheim Cup players with 80 appearances between them and 9 past champions of this first major of the year. The Chevron Championship boasts an international field with representation from 28 countries across the world, and there are 32 players making their championship debut including 2023 LPGA Tour rookies Celine Borge, Hae Ran Ryu, Minami Katsu, Chanettee Wannasaen, Alexa Pano, and Xiaowen Yin.
The 29 major champions in the field boast a total of 41 major titles between them and includes all of last year’s major winners: Jennifer Kupcho (The Chevron Championship), Minjee Lee (U.S. Women’s Open), In Gee Chun (KPMG Women’s PGA Championship), Brooke Henderson (The Amundi Evian Championship) and Ashleigh Buhai (The AIG Women’s Open).
Amateurs are an important part of this championship’s rich history and following Chevron’s revision to the championship’s eligibility criteria last year, the 2023 field will see a total of seven amateurs competing. The Chevron Silverado Showdown, a women’s collegiate event, concluded last week, and Zoe Campos claimed the individual title to earn the sixth amateur exemption spot to make her major debut at Carlton Woods next week. With a score of 5-under, the UCLA sophomore claimed her second consecutive medal of the season and became the first Bruin since 2019 to win multiple medals in a single season.
Campos said, “I am super excited to be competing at Carlton Woods next week for the first major of the year. I can’t believe next week I will be competing alongside the world’s best players in my first major championship, and I can’t even begin to describe how thankful I am for Chevron providing me with this amazing opportunity.”
Chevron has awarded America’s Amari Avery and Mexico’s Isabella Fierro the coveted amateur invitations for the 2023 championship. These sponsor invitations are one of the championship’s long-standing traditions of inviting rising amateur stars to gain invaluable major experience and compete alongside the world’s best players.
Amari Avery is currently ranked 11th on the World Amateur Golf Ranking and has six top-15 finishes this season for the University of Southern California. Last summer, she represented the United States in both the Curtis Cup and Arnold Palmer Cup and will be making her major debut at The Chevron Championship next week.
Isabella Fierro won her first collegiate event last year at the Colombia Classic and shortly after made her major debut at The Chevron Championship where she narrowly missed the cut. She attended Oklahoma State for two years before transferring to the University of Mississippi for her junior year, and during her time with the Cowgirls, she earned third team All-America honors and garnered honourable mention All-America accolades from the WGCA in 2021 and 2020.
Final players for the 132-women-field will be filled by LPGA Members, ranked in the order of their position on the current-season Race to CME Globe Points List through the conclusion of the LOTTE Championship, which concludes on April 15th.
