THE WOODLANDS, TX - The office of James Noack, Commissioner for Precinct 3 of Montgomery County, is encouraging people to bring their old tires for proper recycling at a local center designed for such things.

Not only can old automotive tires easily become an eyesore, but they also can become a health hazard. Uncovered tires, no matter how they are stored, will collect rainwater and become mosquito-breeding sites. As tires deteriorate, they also expose prickly metal strands that can injure children and pets that come into contact with them.

Last month, more than 150 tires were collected from residents of Precinct 3. The materials recovered from tires can be used to make a number of products, including floor mats, car bumpers, playground surfaces, rubber bands and even jewelry. So many durable, useful products can be made from something that would otherwise take up space in a landfill or spoil whatever environment in which they end up.

The Precinct 3 Recycling Center accepts all kinds of tires in any condition, from bicycle tires to truck tires. Residents can drop them off for a nominal fee any time the Recycling Center is open (Monday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed for lunch 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.). Passenger tires cost between $4 and $10 for disposal. Larger tires will cost more depending on size.
