THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Another week has closed with the teams at the top of the district still fighting for positioning. The playoff spots are hard to come by, and the teams of 13-6A understand the importance of each loss and each win.

The Woodlands vs. Conroe

10/3/23

The Lady Highlanders hosted the Lady Tigers for senior night in Tuesday's volleyball action.

The game was a combination of pageantry due to the Woodlands Senior Night celebration and intense competition from the scrappy Lady Tigers. Conroe found themselves down by two sets with the game on the line if they could not win the third. The team began swinging with full force while feeding on persistent mistakes made by the Lady Highlanders, ultimately winning the hard-fought set to force a fourth.

The Woodlands cleaned up their mistakes between sets and grabbed a commanding lead to start the set. In the end, the Lady Highlanders elevated their celebration with a 25-18 win in the fourth set, clinching the match.

Oak Ridge vs. New Caney

10/3/23

With their spot in fourth place still in question, the Lady War Eagles welcomed the Lady Eagles to start both team’s weeks.

Oak Ridge opened the match with a tough win in the first set, only claiming it by six points. Luckily for them, the opening set would be as close as it got. New Caney was kept at arm's distance throughout the rest of the match, with the closest margin of defeat being 10 points in the final set. The commanding presence of the front row saw 37 kills for the Lady War Eagles, which fueled the 3-0 sweep.

The win paired with the loss by Conroe, establishes Oak Ridge as the clear fourth-place team in 13-6A, with only a handful of scenarios enabling other teams to overtake them.

Willis vs. Grand Oaks

10/3/23

The clear-cut top team in 13-6A continued their march as the Lady Grizzlies hit the road to play the Ladykats.

Willis fought against the long odds but was quickly overwhelmed by the offensive power of Grand Oaks. Double-digit kills from three different Lady Grizzlies forced the Ladykats onto their heels the entire match which ended the same as every other for Grand Oaks. A 25-16 opening set was the closest Willis came as the Lady Grizzlies kept up their streak of perfection alive through district play.

Caney Creek vs. Cleveland

10/3/23

Caney Creek opened their doors to Cleveland with the hopes of completing their sweep of the Lady Indians program.

The Lady Panthers started on the right foot with a 12-point victory over the Lady Indians in the opening set. The momentum stayed firmly on Caney Creek’s side through the rest of the match as the players hit effectively into the weak Cleveland defense. The back row could not keep up with the breakneck hitting of the Lady Panthers, who rolled their way to a win in straight sets.

College Park vs. Caney Creek

10/6/23

The Lady Panthers did not keep up the momentum against their next opponent, the College Park Lady Cavs.

The Lady Cavaliers are fighting for control of second place in the district against the Woodlands, and the team played with the passion expected of a playoff contender. The opening set marked the tone, as College Park did not allow double-digit points. Caney Creek managed to get past the 10-point mark in the second and third sets but nowhere near the production of the Lady Cavaliers. Despite this game being their only on the week, College Park comfortably claimed the win in straight sets to stay in second place.

Conroe vs. Oak Ridge

10/6/23

Conroe welcomed the Oak Ridge Lady War Eagles in a bid to stop the team’s slide in the standings in recent weeks.

The Lady Tigers fought valiantly throughout the match, with the knowledge that a loss would set them farther out of playoff contention. However, Oak Ridge took the upper hand in the first and second sets with five-point victories in both. The demonstration of hitting from the Lady War Eagles pushed them ahead in the small margins that determined the match. With the third set, Oak Ridge took greater control of the Conroe defenders in a 25-18 final set that secured the sweep.

Grand Oaks vs. The Woodlands

10/6/23

With home-court advantage playing into their half, Grand Oaks hosted the Lady Highlanders on Friday night.

Even though the Woodlands team has demonstrated their talent throughout the season, the Lady Grizzlies continued to roll. Grand Oaks opened the match with a nine-point victory spurred on by their success in the front row. Despite the hard fight from the Lady Highlanders, the Lady Grizzlies completed the sweep behind 13 kills from Halle Thompson, averaging 4.3 per set.

Grand Oaks remains the top team in the Houston area, and their streak of zero drop sets remains intact through district play.

Cleveland vs. Willis

10/6/23

Cleveland’s woes continued with the team’s matchup against the Willis Ladykats, who had more on the line than anticipated.

The same song and dance played out for the Cleveland Lady Indians that has plagued them during the entirety of district play. The team failed to open with scoring while also conceding hits in the back row. Willis feasted on the opportunities to the tune of double-digit wins in all three sets of the match. The lead was never threatened by Cleveland at any stage of the game, and the Ladykats were able to claim another victory.

The win, paired with Conroe’s loss to Oak Ridge, propelled the Ladykats into the fifth place spot in the district standings with a chance of taking fourth should Oak Ridge procure some losses.
