THE WOODLANDS, TX -- With a winter storm approaching, Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner James Noack’s Office will be preparing roads in advance of potential icy driving conditions to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.

The office has implemented a comprehensive plan to pre-treat roads with a brine solution that prevents ice from accumulating on the road surface.

The use of brine is a proven method to mitigate the impact of winter weather conditions on roadways. By applying a pre-treatment of brine, Commissioner Noack's Office aims to minimize the formation of ice and snow, thereby reducing the risk of accidents and improving road conditions for motorists.

Unlike traditional road salt, brine is a liquid solution that is sprayed onto the road surface before the storm hits. It creates a barrier that prevents ice from bonding to the pavement, making it easier to remove snow and ice during and after the storm. This proactive approach allows for safer and more efficient travel for residents in Precinct 3.

In addition to pre-treating the roads, the Commissioner's Office will closely monitor weather conditions and re-evaluate road conditions throughout the duration of the winter storm. This will enable crews to make informed decisions regarding any necessary road closures or adjustments to their response plan.

While residents are advised to stay home during severe winter weather conditions, Precinct 3 understands that emergency crews, first responders, public works employees and healthcare workers, among others, must have safe access along the roadways. Therefore, roads will not be prematurely closed and will remain open unless they become impassable.

Commissioner Noack emphasizes the importance of preparedness in anticipation of inclement weather conditions, especially major storm events.

"Our priority is the safety and well-being of our residents. By taking proactive measures such as pre-treating roads with brine, we aim to minimize the impact of winter weather conditions and provide safer travel options for our residents," Commissioner Noack said.

If roads do ice over, abrasives (temporary friction improvement) will be applied to the affected roads. Abrasives are typically used when it is too cold for chemicals to work and in an area where significant friction is required to maintain traffic flow, such as steep grades and sharp turns.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the latest updates and emergency notifications through the Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner's Office website and social media platforms. The office will provide regular updates on road conditions, closures, and any additional measures taken to address the winter storm.

The Commissioner's Office is working in collaboration with other agencies to ensure a coordinated response to the winter storm and to minimize its impact on the community.
