CONROE, TX -- The Conroe Lady Tigers defended their home diamond against the visiting Grand Oaks Lady Grizzlies in a 12-5 shootout featuring frequent hits and spectacular offense.

After handling business against the Lady Grizzlies in the top of the first, Conroe stepped up to the plate and made an immediate impact.

A lead-off single from Kaylee Chatman was followed by a stealthy bunt-turned single that put runners on first and second. Grand Oaks managed to get two outs and looked like they may escape without conceding a run. That was before a grounder was driven into the outfield for a one-run RBI that put the Lady Tigers in front 1-0.

Grand Oaks took their chance to respond in the top of the second by putting Ashlyn Roberts on second with just one out. Then a confident swing from Kaitlyn Torres sent the incoming pitch over the fence for a two-run shot to take the lead.

With their lead freshly gone, Conroe’s chance to reclaim it was swift and precise. A single from McKenna Griffin with two outs gave the Lady Tigers enough of a chance to tie the game. Then, a single advanced her into scoring position before Kylee Davis brought her home via an RBI double.

Now tied, Grand Oaks took another confident walk to the plate hoping to reclaim the lead. Their effort began with a lead-off single from Larissa Torres, followed by a bunt that should have been an easy out for the talented Conroe infield.

But, the throw to first sailed overhead to give up the run and turned the Lilly Laney bunt into a triple. Two more RBIs from Ella Brown and Torres rewarded the hard-hitting Lady Grizzlies with a 5-2 lead and the confidence to finish strong.

Conroe was unable to reply in the bottom of the third, and it seemed Grand Oaks could run away with the game if their bats stayed hot.

A single from Abby Garza was a promising start with two out, but she was left stranded at first, and the Lady Tigers re-entered the batter’s box with a renewed fire in their swing.

In four batters, Conroe managed to load the bases against the wavering Grand Oaks pitching, putting pressure on the fielders to limit the potential damage. They were helpless when a grand slam emptied the bases and swung the momentum back to the Conroe dugout with a 6-5 lead.

The Lady Grizzlies were incapable of recapturing the now-lost momentum through the next two-and-a-half innings. Their red-hot bats turned ice-cold, making their task to retake the lead all the more daunting.

Their fate in defeat was sealed in the bottom of the sixth by another stunning offensive display from the Lady Tigers. A triple and hit-by-pitch situated runners on the corners before a steal put both Lady Tigers into scoring position. A bunt loaded the bags before a wild pitch scored an easy run to extend Conroe’s lead. The error was followed by a lengthy series of RBIs, wild pitches, and walks that totaled six more runs for the Lady Tigers ahead of the sixth inning.

Neither squad found meaningful traction during the sixth inning, and the overwhelming lead loomed over Grand Oaks as the seventh got underway.

Two outs quickly put the Lady Grizzlies into a dire situation, but a last gasp from Kiley Milligan gave slight hope with a single. A follow-up walk from Brown put runners on first and second, but they were both stranded, ending the game 12-5 in favor of the Lady Tigers.

The Conroe victory keeps the team at the top of the district standings as the playoffs loom on the horizon. Their next test will be against Cleveland on Tuesday, while Grand Oaks hopes to cling to their playoff hopes against the same Lady Indians on Friday.
