HS Sports: Conroe Stands Alone As Playoff Reps In Baseball And Softball
CONROE, TX -- The Conroe Tigers stand strong as the last team from District 13-6A in the playoffs for baseball and softball, with the next round of play beginning on Thursday.
Despite two trajectories sending the District Champion Conroe Softball team and the fourth-place Tiger Baseball team into the postseason, both squads have battled through adverse situations to emerge as the lone contenders from 13-6A.
Conroe Softball:
Softball Head Coach Rachelle Harris has tooled the team around stout hitting and a dominant pitching game to keep the team afloat despite a wide range of playing scenarios. Rescheduled games, hitting slumps, and quality opponents have all tried to derail the District Champions, but trust in the team’s system has prevailed.
Dominant wins in the Bi-District and Regional Semifinals have shown the rest of the playoff contenders what Conroe is made of. Timely hitters, strong pitchers, and a lock-down defense that has shut out two out of three opponents the team has faced.
Adding to Conroe’s dominance on the softball field is the feeling of completeness across the field. Players sprint and dive around the field for the love of the game and the love of their teammates, knowing that their part in a win is as valuable as anyone else’s.
Players like Eva Lantagne, Alissa Sneed, and Addison Mason have all played their parts in a symphony of destructive force for the Tiger softball team that looks poised to continue the push toward a state title.
Conroe Baseball:
Despite entering the playoffs just one game ahead of the fifth-placed team in the 13-6A standings, the Tiger Baseball team has managed to survive longer than anyone else they entered the playoffs alongside.
All three of the other 13-6A teams that made the playoffs with Conroe were taken out of the tournament during the Area Round of play. But, determined play and pushing aggressively have benefited Conroe on their way to a historic push similar to the softball team.
Gutsey play following reschedules and a double-header in the Bi-District Round saw the Tigers secure an opening round win over Aldine. The win came with celebration from throughout the school to commemorate the team’s first playoff series win since 1997.
Conroe followed their Bi-District showing by upping the stakes to play in another three-game series against Klein Collins. Clinical play from players like Tanner Trantham and Gavin Stanger saw the Tigers pull off an immaculate comeback in the bottom of the sixth to ensure the team will keep their season alive.
While not winning as lopsidedly as softball, the excitement of watching Jeff Raymer and his players execute in the clutch gives very similar feelings.
Now both teams will make their way to Kyle, Texas, where they will play the same opponent, the Midway Panthers.
The collision of different paths has brought both programs to the same meeting point, and the excitement of gold and black filling the stands will be unmatched by any environment this athletic season.
