THE WOODLANDS, TX – It’s Chinese Lunar New Year’s Day today, setting off a two-week celebration observed by millions of Asians across the globe. If you’re of a celebratory mood yourself, have fun with the festivities until the observance ends on February 12 with the Lantern Festival.

Unlike the western-world zodiac, which is a monthly supposed calculation of someone’s traits using the stars and their alignment, the Chinese zodiac is yearly and all-animal based. Like the moody crabs or tenacious bulls in our zodiac, each animal in the Chinese version dictates a sense of traits, characteristics, and abilities seemingly gleaned just from when one is born.

2025 is the Year of the Snake, the sixth animal in the Chinese zodiac cycle that lasts a dozen years. Perhaps not coincidentally, the first year of the Gen-X generation – 1965 – was a previous snake year. The last time it was celebrated was in 2013.

Of the traits attributed to ‘Snakes,’ some of the most popular ones include:

  • Intelligence – quick thinking; able to quickly grasp the main points of a problem and make good decisions
  • Intuitiveness – a strong sense of intuition and understanding of how others are feeling
  • Charisma – charming and graceful; often attractive to others and have many admirers
  • Determination – goal-oriented; they work hard and hate to fail
  • Responsibility – devoted partners and known for being good at forming deep bonds with others

Other traits include being mysterious, calm, strategic, positive, stylish, private, sceptical, and materialistic. People born in the year of the snake are also said to be super smart, if not a little untrustworthy and sneaky.

Notable figures born in snake years include John F. Kennedy, Taylor Swift, and Woodlands Online’s own news editor.
