Conroe ISD Board of Trustees Names Dr. David Vinson as Superintendent of Schools

CONROE, TX -- The Conroe ISD Board of Trustees officially approved the hiring of Dr. David Vinson as Superintendent of Schools during its special board meeting on September 18.
“On behalf of the Conroe ISD Board of Trustees, we are excited to welcome Dr. David Vinson as our next superintendent,” said Board President Misty Odenweller. “His student-centered leadership, record of academic excellence, and deep respect for educators align with our priorities for every child in every classroom. We look forward to partnering with him to elevate student outcomes and ensure every student thrives. We are grateful to Dr. Ted Landry for his leadership during this transition.”
Dr. Vinson has served as Superintendent of Wylie ISD since 2011, where he earned a statewide reputation for academic excellence, fiscal responsibility, and student-centered innovation. Under his leadership, Wylie ISD consistently received “A” ratings from the Texas Education Agency, expanded dual-credit enrollment by 600%, launched the nationally recognized Wylie Way character education framework, and successfully delivered more than $700 million in bond programs on time and within budget.
“I am beyond excited to join this great school district and serve our students, families, educators, and the broader community,” said Dr. Vinson. “I am humbled and honored that our Board of Trustees has chosen me to lead Conroe ISD, and I look forward to working alongside our staff to ensure every student grows in both academics and character.”
A proud graduate of Texas Tech University, Dr. Vinson holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management and Marketing, a Master’s in Educational Leadership, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Character Education. His career in public education began in 1992 as a gifted and talented teacher and coordinator in Idalou ISD. He later served in leadership roles in Frenship ISD and as Superintendent of Floresville ISD before joining Wylie ISD.
Dr. Vinson has also been an influential voice statewide, serving as chair of the Student Behavior Management Coalition to help secure passage of House Bill 6 in 2025, a landmark reform in student discipline. He was also a key contributor in the development of the HB3 Reading Academies, advancing early literacy across Texas.
Dr. Vinson and his wife, Cristy, are the proud parents of two children: their son, Cal, a Texas Tech graduate now pursuing graduate studies at Carnegie Mellon University, and their daughter, Kate, a graduate of North Park University in Chicago.
