THE WOODLANDS, TX – Meals on Wheels Montgomery County has put out a call to the community to help Congress increase funding for the Older Americans Act.

Funding expires Sept. 30

“Meals on Wheels programs and the seniors they serve need your help. We are urging Congress to increase funding for Older Americans Act (OAA) senior nutrition programs, which support the delivery of 251 million meals to 2.2 million older adults each year,” said Carrie Watkins, president and CEO of MOWMC. “However, there are an estimated 2.5 million more seniors who are not receiving the services they need. Now is a critical time for you to contact your Members of Congress. This is where you can help – your voice makes a difference.”

Congress must take action on funding for the OAA Nutrition Program by September 30, when current funding expires. This funding is the very foundation that federally powers Meals on Wheels nationwide.

The organization’s website has a simple landing page for you to reach out to your congressman with this need. Simply click on the link below, then type your name, home address, and email to automatically send a message to your Members of Congress asking them to increase funding for OAA programs: www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org/email-congress/.

“Millions of older adults face food insecurity, uncertain if or when help will come – and tens of thousands are already stuck on waitlists for Meals on Wheels. Local programs have continued to face devastating choices: cutting back services, turning people away or, in some cases, closing their doors entirely. Rising food and operational costs mean the dollar isn’t going as far, and flat funding is not enough; we need Congress to provide increased sustainable funding,” said Watkins. “Without this, we will fall further behind.”
