LSC–University Park presents “Rent,” the groundbreaking Broadway rock musical

HOUSTON, TX -- Lone Star College–University Park (LSC-University Park) kicks off its fall production season with Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking musical “Rent,” opening Friday, Oct. 24, in the main stage theater of the campus’ Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Building, 930 University Park Campus Dr., Houston, TX 77070.
“‘Rent’ is one of the most influential and beloved musicals of all time. Its themes of love and community have resonated with audiences for three decades now,” said William Grayson, chair of performing arts at LSC–University Park. “It has been one of the great pleasures of my career to work with this cast, crew, and design team to bring this show to our campus. We cannot wait to share this incredible production with everyone.”
Set in New York City’s East Village during the height of the AIDS/HIV crisis, “Rent” follows a year in the life of a group of young artists navigating loss, love, and hope. Known for its raw, emotional story and powerful score, the musical has remained a cultural classic since its Broadway debut in 1996. Its message continues to inspire students and engage community audiences alike.
The production, directed by Grayson, features student actors, community performers, and a skilled design and technical team whose collaboration highlights the college’s strong performing arts program. Whether a longtime fan or new to the show, audiences can expect a memorable experience.
“Rent” runs two weekends, Oct. 24–26 and Oct. 30–Nov. 2. The show is open to the public and contains mature themes. To support student involvement and access to the arts, all students—regardless of age, school, or institution—can attend for $1 with a valid student ID.
