YMCA of Greater Houston‘s Before & After School Care Helps Children Learn, Connect and Grow
HOUSTON, TX -- As families settle into new school routines, the YMCA of Greater Houston is helping make the transition easier with Before & After School Care programs that extend learning beyond the classroom. Serving more than 4,000 children each day at approximately 160 sites across school districts and charter schools in the Houston area, the YMCA’s programs provide a safe, engaging environment where students build confidence, develop friendships and explore new interests before and after the school day.
According to the Afterschool Alliance, for every child enrolled in an afterschool program, approximately three more would participate if one were available, underscoring the continued demand for accessible, high-quality programs.
“Our Before & After School Care program is about more than providing child care,” said Stephen Ives, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Houston. “Families need dependable care they can trust, and children deserve a place where they can continue learning and growing. That’s why we’re proud to provide both through our partnerships with schools across Greater Houston."
Guided by trained YMCA staff, students participate in hands-on activities that encourage curiosity, creativity and critical thinking while reinforcing skills learned in the classroom. Along the way, social skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving are strengthened by participating in music, art, STEM exercises, service learning and character-building opportunities. Daily opportunities for indoor and outdoor physical activity help children stay active, build confidence and develop lifelong healthy habits.
Complementing the school day, the YMCA’s Before & After School Care program combines academic support, enrichment sessions, and physical wellness into a well-balanced experience. A typical day at the YMCA Before & After School program includes:c
- Y Community Time: Students participate in icebreakers, group experiences and social-emotional learning while enjoying a healthy snack.
- Brain Power Hour: Dedicated homework time with opportunities for academic support and self-guided learning.
- Exploration: Age-appropriate, structured, hands-on, fun projects that reinforce academic learning concepts. The Y uses an evidence-based STEM and literacy curriculum in partnership with Scholastic Learning and others.
- Enrichment: Music, art, theatre, character education, service learning and other experiences that spark creativity and foster a love of service and empathy for others.
- Energize: Indoor and outdoor physical activities using the CATCH Kids Club curriculum to promote lifelong healthy habits.
Through its partnerships with local schools, the YMCA of Greater Houston is helping kids discover their potential by fostering learning, healthy habits and connections that extend beyond the classroom. Together with families and schools, the nonprofit is building stronger communities and helping children and families feel supported and ready to succeed this school year.
In addition to the Before & After School Care program, the YMCA of Greater Houston offers care options throughout the year, including early care, care on school holidays and in-service days, Holiday Camp and Summer Camp, providing families with dependable support whenever school is out.
