Training a Foolproof Recall Using Reward-Based Methods
Teaching your dog a joyful, tail-wagging recall is one of the most essential and rewarding skills you can build together. Using positive reinforcement transforms the entire process into a fun, high-energy game you and your dog will both look forward to playing!
We suggest beginning your training with your pup on a leash in a low-distraction environment. The leash serves as a gentle anchor, helping to keep your dog’s attention focused on you rather than letting it drift toward every intriguing leaf, wandering squirrel, or mysterious sidewalk smell. The more you practice this behavior, the longer you can make the leash; ultimately you will be able to work without a leash, although you’ll want to make sure you are in a safe, enclosed environment during training sessions so that you are both set up for success.
Start by saying your dog’s name to get their attention, and then immediately give your chosen recall cue. Be sure to use a high-pitched, excited, and enthusiastic voice—that excitement is a critical ingredient that instantly signals to your dog that something wonderful is about to happen!
The moment—and we mean the instant—your dog turns their head or body your way, give an enthusiastic “Yes!” or your chosen marker word. This precise, instant marker is how your dog learns exactly what action earned them the reward. When they reach you, pour on the fun: this is the jackpot moment! Reward them lavishly with a combination of high-value treats, their favorite toys, excited praise, or a belly rub—whatever makes your individual dog light up. Make this interaction the single greatest thing they’ve ever experienced.
Finally, after the reward session, use a happy, clear release word like “Free!” or “Go play!” This is an often-missed, but critical, step. It teaches your dog the full rhythm of the game: come running to you, get rewarded, and then be released to go back to exploring and sniffing. This clear signal ensures they don't simply stay glued to your side and understand that the fun continues even after the recall is complete.
