OAK RIDGE NORTH, Texas – The Oak Ridge High School boys’ soccer program is growing up.

The War Eagles claimed their first District 14-5A victory of the season at home Friday, holding off Conroe 2-1 to improve to 8-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in district matches.

Jose Mendoza scored both goals, one in each half to continue his torrid pace.

“He’s on a tear right now,” Oak Ridge coach Jason Fanning said. “(He’s scored) all five of our district goals.”

Assists came from Yovani Osorio and Marcos Chavez.

The teams played to a 1-1 standoff after one half.

“We had a lot of chances in the first half,” Fanning said. “The wind was really the factor. I thought we adjusted to it.”

Mendoza then tipped in the game-winner early in the second half.

It was a big win for the War Eagles, who stumbled out of the starting gate.

“We started out district with a loss to a good Bryan team in a game I thought we could have shared the points at least,” Fanning said. “And then we tied College Park last week. So it feels like we’re slowly climbing the ladder.”

And that’s saying something in a district full of quality programs.

“What can you say, you look at a side like (Conroe) and they’re 0-fer,” Fanning said. “This district is really competitive. It’s a shame that we have to beat up on each other for a couple months and finally four of us get to (make the playoffs). That’s really what the shame of it is.”

Fanning noted that the Oak Ridge-Conroe match has turned into somewhat of a rivalry.

“For it to be a rivalry you have to have some success against them and since we’ve been 5A, this is the first time we’re beating any of these teams,” he said. “So it’s more of a rivalry because these guys know each other real well.”

The Oak Ridge Lady War Eagles soccer team followed suit, claiming a 2-0 victory over Conroe on Friday at Buddy Moorhead Stadium. Kamri Brown and Teejay Keith scored goals for Oak Ridge (11-2-2, 3-0) while Katherine Tesno recorded the shutout in goal.

The Woodlands Lady Highlanders went out of district to claim a 2-0 victory over St. Agnes on Friday at Woodforest Bank Stadium. Taylor Campbell and Gretchen Cahill scored second-half goals to break open scoreless first half.

The Lady Highlanders improve to 10-1-2 overall and remain 2-0-1 in district play.
