HS Football: Willis Standout Jermaine Bishop Jr. Verbally Commits to Texas Longhorns
WILLIS, TX -- Jermaine Bishop Jr. charts his next steps after back-to-back standout years at Willis by committing to join The University of Texas Longhorns following the completion of his Senior season.
The dual-threat, defensive/offensive weapon has blazed a trail of dominance during the past two seasons as a Willis Wildkat. Bishop Jr. was a sensational defender with a built-in priority to lockdown opposing teams’ best weapons, while providing highlight-reel plays through his dazzling offensive skills.
During the 2023 campaign, Bishop Jr. and fellow star D.J. Lagway lit up Willis’ competition by forming a formidable two-headed monster that forced opposing defenses to prioritize one or the other.
Willis’s ability to spread the ball during the final season of Lagway’s tenure benefited Bishop Jr. heavily, as seen by his Utility Player of the Year victory during the district award season. The win was a taste of things to come during the 2024 season, where he became the primary workhorse of the Wildkat offense.
Finishing just behind College Park’s Clint Rachal in receiving yards and touchdowns, Bishop Jr. had a profound impact during Willis’ games. The trust from Head Coach Trent Miller to put the ball in Jermaine’s hands and let him work was felt through every catch, run, and return that Bishop Jr. had in 2024.
The impact from Bishop Jr. on the district was so significant that it came to little surprise when he earned District Most Valuable Player in 2024 in just his Junior season.
Eyes had already been on Bishop Jr. before his Junior year began, with teams like Texas, Texas A&M, Michigan, USC, and 20 other programs offering scholarships and tremendous opportunities to the Wildkat product.
Bishop Jr. showed slight hints in his decision process, repping burnt orange and Longhorn logos during a handful of his district appearances.
But the announcement of a hard commitment by 247sports confirms the suspicion that Bishop Jr. is going to keep his talents close to home while representing one of the state’s flagship institutions.
