Woodforest launches two local charity drives

Woodforest is trying to brighten the holidays for those in need this season, launching two drives for local charities.

On Dec. 8-10, donations can be dropped off at the Woodforest Homefinder Lodge, 101 Elk Trace Parkway, to benefit women and children at the Montgomery County Women’s Center. Requests are being made for items such as bottled water, mattress and pillow protectors, paper towels, toilet paper, 13- and 33-gallon trash bags, new women’s underwear and size 2 diapers that will be used at the emergency shelter, which provides a safe and secure refuge for victims of domestic abuse. “With the women’s center providing aid to more than 800 survivors of domestic assault each year, the need is always there,” said Virgil Yoakum, general manager of Woodforest. “We are trying to both directly offer assistance and to create awareness.”

Also, gifts of new, unwrapped toys for children up to age 12 can be made for the Toys for Tots program.

“We’ve collected toys here in Woodforest since 2013, but this year, the need is even greater in Montgomery County due to Hurricane Harvey,” Yoakum said.

Toys collected will go to local Montgomery County youth.

Those making donations can also enjoy hot cocoa and cookies. The Homefinder Lodge will be open 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Nearly 2,400 families make their home in Woodforest, a heavily wooded community located seven miles west of Interstate 45 and five miles north of The Woodlands. Builders have 30 homes open for touring, including townhomes, patio homes, luxury homes and custom homes. Prices are from the $200,000s to the millions.
