Coach Sara Bany: I can almost let the results speak for themselves: We have three individual SPC Champions, two SPC Champion relays, 13 All-SPC Athletes, seven new school records, 36 personal best times, and a boys’ SPC Championship Trophy. But these results don’t tell half of the story. This team came together this year and embraced change. For the first time, they were required to come to morning practices at 6:00 am as a team, in an outdoor pool. Some mornings it was 75 and humid or raining, other mornings it was 33 degrees with a “feels like” temperature of 28. They still came and they still swam. For the first time they came to morning weights as a team and lifted and did pull-ups until their hands were ripping only to have to go to school and then afternoon swim practice. For the first time we travelled to meets all over Houston and as far as Corpus Christi. We spent countless hours on buses, in the water and in the weight room, as a team.

Even though this championship went to the boys– they swam fast, they swam for each other and they earned it. This was a full boys’ and girls’ effort. We needed every bit of encouragement, hard work, and cheering that we got from each individual on The John Cooper Swim Team. Our little team of 18 with one coach outswam and out cheered teams three times as big with four times the coaches. I cannot express how proud I am of these athletes for their accomplishments this season. It has been an honor to be their coach.

SPC Roster:

Tillie Claggett, Lauren Cordes, Victoria Davila, Katia Guerrero, Nicholas Harris, Noelle Harris, Adelaide Herman, Caitlin Lanigan, Vidyal Pradeepkumar, Jane Ritch, Syuen See, Chris Seymour, Mitchell Shannon, Henry Shea, William Staebel, Ellie Wang, Drew Wilkerson, Campbell Wolford

Coach Bryan Sherman: I am so proud of the team. They played their hearts out for four games and came so close to winning SPC, but fell just short in the final minutes of the championship against one of the top teams in the nation. Their effort and commitment to one another weas amazing and I am truly in awe of how they performed. The loss hurts but we know that over time we will be able to look back on this season with pride. For me as a coach, this is a group I will never forget.
