THE WOODLANDS, TX -- All three phases of the College Park football team were responsible for putting points on the scoreboard in the 31-24 win over Aldine Davis on Friday night. The home opener for the Cavaliers got off to a weird start, beginning with a weather delay that pushed the opening kickoff back an hour. Once the game was underway, College Park nearly had a nightmare start when starting quarterback Camden Farmer had trouble with the snap on back-to-back plays. The Cavaliers retained possession but immediately switched to Ty Buckmon at QB.

Buckmon put together a solid drive that resulted in a field goal for College Park. Then, after Davis went three-and-out on their first drive, the ensuing punt would give College Park their first touchdown of the season. CP linebacker Marcell Faulkner broke free through Davis’s punt team to block the punt into the end zone, where after a mad scramble, Faulkner would come away with the football for the touchdown.

Up 10 in the second quarter, it would be the defense’s turn to put six on the board for the Cavaliers. After a Davis fumble returned for a touchdown was called back for a block in the back penalty, College Park took over with good field position. However, a missed field goal meant the Cavs were coming away empty-handed after the turnover. That was until CP linebacker Dylan Hazen forced a fumble, scooped it, and scored to put College Park up 17 with 7:26 remaining in the first half. A late field goal from Aldine Davis would send College Park into the locker room with a 14-point lead at the half.

Coming into the season, College Park looked to improve on how they finished games. Friday’s game was an up and down performance in the second half for the Cavaliers. A mixture of missed assignments and shaky tackling helped Aldine Davis drive the ball down the field for their first score of the game on the opening drive of the third quarter. Luckily, for the Cavaliers, QuaJon Charles came to show out at Woodforest Bank Stadium. Charles answered Davis quarterback Jah’Rell Steven’s one-yard touchdown with a 95-yard house call on the following kickoff.

Late in the fourth, Davis would catch College Park sleeping with an 81-yard halfback pass for a touchdown. Davis running back DeMarcus Barlow connected with receiver Isaiah Harrell to bring the lead back down to seven. Once again, with 2:18 remaining in the game, QuaJon Charles would put the Cavs on his back and breakaway on a 60-yard rushing TD to effectively put the game away. The Falcons did manage to score one more time, but after a College Park recovery on the onside kick, Hank Hudson would take a knee to run out the clock and send College Park to 1-0 on the year.

In the postgame interview, Coach Madison called Friday’s game a good opportunity to experience different game situations and handle facing some adversity.

Up next for College Park (1-0) is a trip to Thorne Stadium in Aldine for a matchup with the MacArthur Generals. Friday’s game was a Woodlands Online on-demand broadcast sponsored by The Woodlands Dental Group and RE/MAX The Woodlands & Spring.
