THE WOODLANDS, TX -- With District 15-6A volleyball games in full swing, Tuesday night gave us the first volleyball edition of the War of the Woods when The Woodlands hosted rival College Park. While it was an intense competition off the court between the rival student sections, the Highlanders mostly controlled things on the court during their sweep of the Cavaliers.

The story of Tuesday’s game was Clara Brower and Dylan Mayberry refusing to let the hot start of College Park in each set make the game close. It seemed as if the junior setter and senior outside hitter were having their names called by the arena PA announcer after every point.

College Park found themselves leading early in sets two and three, but the overall power and athleticism of players like Amanda Ifeany and Julieta Valdes to go along with Brower and Mayberry’s game-changing play were just too much for CP.

Cassidy Copeland was a bright spot for the Cavs on Tuesday. The freshman, and crowd-favorite of the Cavalier student section, is a serious threat to opponents at the net. Copeland’s blocks continued to provide a spark for College Park throughout the game.

The Woodlands took round one in the 2019 edition of the rivalry, 25-17, 25-19, 25-16. The win moves the Highlanders to 29-2 (2-0 in district). For College Park, they drop to 16-3 (1-1 in district). The two teams will meet for the second and final time in the regular season on October 4.

Other scores around the area:

Oak Ridge def. Klein Collins 25-18, 26-28, 20-25, 25-15, 15-9

Klein Oak def. Conroe 25-11, 25-11, 25-18

Grand Oaks def Lake Creek 25-12, 25-11, 25-20
