THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The Woodlands Township will begin offering water bikes as a new and exciting rental option at Riva Row Boat House on Thursday, May 21, 2020. Water bikes are being added to the many rental options already available at Riva Row including single and tandem (or double) kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and swan pedal boats.

“We are happy to announce the new addition of water bikes to the Riva Row Boat House – especially now that we are entering Phase Two of the governor’s orders of Opening Up Texas,” stated Township Chairman Gordy Bunch. “We look forward to our residents coming out and enjoying one of more attractive features in The Woodlands (The Woodlands Waterway) and enjoying the outdoors in The Woodlands.”

These fun additions to The Woodlands Waterway will be positioned in the lower level of the waterway along with kayaks and paddleboards, and riders will be able to explore the area from Riva Row Park all the way out to the edge of Lake Woodlands, passing the Grogan’s Mill Bridge and East Shore, and discovering Mitchell Island on the way.

“The Explorer” model water bike, manufactured by Hydrobikes, Inc, (www.hydrobikes.com) is a pedal-powered water bike built for single riders. The Township has four (4) of these water bikes for hourly rental by individuals or a group of up to four people at a time.

Rules for use of the water bikes will include a single-person weight limit of 350 pounds; no glass, pets, or alcohol allowed; lifejackets must be worn at all times and riders are asked to pedal only from a forward-facing, seated position to help maintain safety and balance. Always be aware of other boaters and yield to those who may be slower and less maneuverable.

Water bikes can be rented for just $25/hour. Other rental options at Riva Row Boat House will continue to include singles kayaks ($15/hour), tandem kayaks ($20/hour), stand-up paddleboards ($20/hour) and swan pedal boats ($25/hour). Prices listed here are for the first hour; lifejackets and paddles are always included in every rental. Riva Row Boat House is currently open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the last boat going out at 7 p.m. Riva Row Boat House is closed on Wednesdays.

Water bikes are extremely stable, easy to ride, and are great for ages 10 and up when accompanied on the water by a parent or guardian in another boat, or 16 and up if riding alone. With cruising speeds of anywhere between zero and six miles per hour, riders can adopt a leisurely pace to soak in the sun and scenery or pedal as hard as their heart’s content for a serious workout. During Phases I and II of The Governor’s Report to Open Texas, Riva Row Boat House is operating by reservation only and certain protective measures have been put in place to allow for safe social distancing and to protect both customers and staff from the spread of COVID-19.

These procedures include online completion of liability waivers and payments, increased cleanings of surfaces and equipment before and after each use, physical barriers, and staff are currently not able to physically help customers into the boats (verbal cues and supervision are provided). Those interested are encouraged to call now to reserve a chance to be one of the first to experience the sights and sounds of The Woodlands Waterway like never before: With a bike, ON the water!
