HS Volleyball Scoreboard: The Woodlands wins the showdown with Grand Oaks

The Highlanders won 25-19, 20-25, 22-25,25-20, 15-9

The matchup between two of the most talented teams in the Houston-area did not disappoint. The Highlanders and Grizzlies traded haymakers for five sets as The Woodlands came away with the comeback victory to move to 2-0 in District 13-6A.

It was an energetic and slightly chaotic start to the match on Tuesday night. Early points were scored on weird deflections and bad serves. The Highlanders were first to settle in thanks to big-time plays from Jacqueline Lee and Reagan Whatley, and they were able to create just enough breathing room in a highly competitive opening set to pick up the first win of the match.

The Grizzlies completely flipped the game around in sets 2 and 3. Grand Oaks took their play to another level and began feeding off the energy of the home crowd. The trio of Aidan Ballard, Sarah Sampson, and Fallon Thompson flourished offensively. Pair that with some momentous blocks from Kamie Lohnes, and the Grizzlies had the Top 25-ranked Highlanders on the ropes.

However, The Woodlands is a championship-quality team. Those teams often shine brightest when facing adversity, and that’s exactly what this club did with their backs against the wall on the road. The Highlanders needed their top players to find an extra gear and they did just that in sets 4 and 5. Seniors Clara Brower and Natasha Zorbas stepped up when needed every time, and they did it with authority. The Highlanders proved that while there is a lot of talent in this district, they are still a tier higher.

The rematch will be highly anticipated and should be just as entertaining, but for now, the keys to the district championship are still in the hands of the Highlanders.
