THE WOODLANDS, TX --

Grand Oaks 7, College Park 4

After a slight weather delay before the first pitch, Grand Oaks rained on College Park’s district opener parade. Despite being outhit 10-6, the Grizzlies leaned on strong defensive play and capitalized on CP’s mistakes to earn their 10th overall win of the season.

Jason Burger got the start for the Grizzlies and put in five innings of work (three strikeouts, one earned run). Connor McElroy and Kyle Derusse finished the game for the Grizzlies in the win (Derusse - 2 SOs, 0 ERs).

Larry Drake did the most damage inside the batters’ box, going 3-4 in the win for Grand Oaks.

Alex Diaz and Harrison Helton were the Cavaliers’ leading hitters, each going 2-4, including a double and triple for Diaz.

Monday night’s game was scoreless until each team scored a run in the third inning. Shane Martin ripped a ground ball up the middle to bring in a run for Grand Oaks. In the bottom of the inning, College Park answered when Holden Rook beat the tag at home plate, scoring from third after a groundout.

Fielding miscues in the fourth and fifth innings allowed Grand Oaks to take a 4-1 lead. College Park was able to grab a run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Helton.

The sixth inning was an interesting one. Grand Oaks loaded the bases and scored three runs without a single hit. However, just when it seemed the Grizzlies had the win locked up, College Park bounced back in the bottom of the inning. After RBIs from Cal Garcia and Helton, the Cavaliers loaded the bases and looked to complete a wild comeback with one swing of the bat. Instead, Derusse came into the game and picked up a crucial strikeout to keep the Grizzlies in front for good.

Grand Oaks (10-4-1 / 1-0) travels to Conroe on Wednesday. College Park (7-7-1 / 0-1) will look to bounce back on the road at Willis on Wednesday.

Other District Scores:

The Woodlands 12, Willis 5
(Conner Doucet - 4-4, 2 RBIs)
