MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- We have received several media inquiries concerning the latest United States Supreme Court opinion on the issue of abortion. Because this a highly emotional and complex issue, and because some media outlets excerpt quotes without full context, we want to make our statement in this format.

As of today, Texas criminal law has not changed. At some point in the future, H.B. No. 1280 will likely become effective as a matter of law. H.B. No. 1280 creates a criminal offense for those who perform abortions under certain circumstances. This law also creates a civil penalty of not less than $100,00 to be enforced by the Attorney General Office. The statue doe not subject a pregnant female on whom an abortion is performed, induced, or attempted to any criminal, civil, or administrative liability or penalty.

Our responsibility is to follow the law as passed by state legislators and signed by the governor. We do not preemptively determine to disregard any criminal statue. We employ our discretion to address the individual facts of the individual cases presented to us, and we perform this service to obtain a just result consistent with the values of the community we serve.
