THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Rotary Club of The Woodlands recently held a lunch celebration where more than three dozen local high school seniors were awarded scholarships totaling more than $30,000. Students, their parents, teachers, and administrators from The Woodlands Christian Academy, The John Cooper School, iSchool The Woodlands, Oak Ridge High School, The Woodlands High School, The Woodlands College Park High School, and Grand Oaks High school were present at the 2023 Rotary Club of The Woodlands Student of the Year and Scholarship Luncheon at The Woodlands Country Club.

“We are thrilled to gather here to celebrate some very accomplished students who will forever be known asd Rotary Club of The Woodlands students of the year who have proven that they value our motto, ‘Service Above Self,’” said Cindy Heiser, a Rotarian and advisor for this year’s nominations.

In order to be considered for a scholarship, the students had to be nominated by a teacher, counselor, or administrator from their school. Further, they must have demonstrated strong academic performance, obtained two letters of recommendation, completed a leadership questionnaire, and written essays describing life experiences, leadership, past awards, and extracurricular activities. The selection committee was comprised of chair Evan Berlin, Debbie Klein, Nicholas Gabriel, Kelly Hoot, and Sue Turney.

Present at the event were several school administrators, including Julie Ambler, Head of School at The Woodlands Christian Academy; Dr. Stephen Popp, head of School at The John Cooper School; and Luis Pratts, Head of iSchool The Woodlands. Guests included Dr. Chris Povich, Assistant Superintendent of High Schools at Conroe Independent School District; Mamie Miller Prajean, Head of Counselors, Conroe ISD; Laura Willard, Administrative Coordinator of College/Career Readiness; and the principals from Oak Ridge, The Woodlands, College Park, and Grand Oaks.

“I am pleased to be here today to participate in the recognition of some very deserving students,” said Teresa Wagaman, former president of The Rotary Club of The Woodlands and current trustee on the CISD board. “Each of our Students of the Year have balanced their time and energy between their education, family, friends, teammates, faith, and serving their communities.”

Zach Richmond, owner/broker of Richmond Realty Group and current president of this local chapter of Rotary International, was honored to congratulate the scholarship recipients in the name of service.

“We as Rotarians provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders, and these students embody that Rotarian mission,” he said. “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.”
