UPDATE: MCSO Mourns the Line of Duty Death of Deputy Charles Rivette

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- Sheriff Rand Henderson and staff have visited with Deputy Francis and his family in the hospital. We can report that Deputy Francis, though severely injured, is talking with family, friends and medical staff. He is scheduled for more tests tonight and in the coming days, and has a long road to recovery.

The inmate that was being transported, is identified as 37-year-old Daniel Baxley. Baxley is still under hospital care and is scheduled to have continued testing and surgery tomorrow.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Deputy Rivette's family and loved ones during this extremely distressing time. We also have Deputy Francis’ family and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers as he recovers. We understand the gravity of this situation and we are committed to providing them with all the necessary support and assistance. To that extent we have had an outpouring of support to the families from the community and organizations.

We want to assure our families we are standing with them as they go through this difficult situation. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and we stand with them in their grief.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is deeply saddened to announce the line-of-duty death of Deputy Charles Rivette. Deputy Rivette tragically lost his life in a vehicle crash while transporting an inmate in Centerville, Texas.

The incident, which occurred on February 21, 2024, also resulted in serious injuries to Deputy James Francis and the inmate who was being transported. An investigation is being conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Sheriff Henderson expresses his profound sorrow and extends condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Rivette. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office family is lifting up Deputy Rivette, Deputy Francis and the injured inmate in our prayers.

The entire MCSO family is hurting from this loss and stands together in mourning the passing of Deputy Rivette.
