THE WOODLANDS, TX – Last Saturday saw a special election that, while small in turnout, had impacts on nearly every community in The Woodlands area, Montgomery and Harris Counties, and Texas in general.

Only six percent of Montgomery County voters turned out for early voting and Election Day – or mailed in their ballots – with 29,247 ballots counted out of 473,274 registered voters in the county.

On a state level, former Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon received 17,174 votes for the unexpired term of State Senator District 4 over Democratic opponent Ron Angeletti’s 4,569 votes. The seat, which opened when Brandon Creighton stepped down last year, was given to Ligon with 79% of the county vote and 75% of the districtwide vote.

Several mayoral positions were decided for the area, with two of these races won with less than the majority vote. There were Magnolia mayoral contenders, with Chris Blair winning the plurality vote with 45% of ballots cast for him. Incumbent Montgomery Mayor Sara Countryman kept her seat against three challengers, also receiving less than 50% of the total vote.

Clearer mayoral winners were Paul Bond – who won reelection with 87% of the vote – for Oak Ridge North Mayor, and incumbent Shenandoah Mayor John Escoto, who beat challenger Ron Raymaker with 73% of the vote.

Three positions on Conroe City Council, an entity undergoing controversy over several issues including a local hotel and festival fees, were decided with Kristin Hoisington for Position 3, Ken Blevins for Position 4, and John Sellars for Position 5. The three-way race for City of Conroe Municipal Judge has narrowed to two, with Tanya Maddux headed for a runoff election against Jay Gross.

To prove that every vote counts, The tough-fought race for Magnolia City Council Position 4 was given to Brandon Jacobs, who squeezed out a win over Todd Kana by only five votes.

Also on the ballot were numerous MUD director races and propositions, as well as a proposition for Magnolia ISD that passed with 63.5% of the vote. Two directors were voted in for The Woodlands MUD No. 1 – Walt Lisiewski and George Obedorf.
