Less than 0.5% of Montgomery County voters show up on first day of early voting
THE WOODLANDS, TX – Of Montgomery County’s 473,757 registered voters as of today, fewer than half of one percent of them showed up in person to cast their ballots on the first day of early voting for the statewide runoff election.
Even throwing in the 2,243 ballots that had been received through the mail, that leaves a grand total of 6,722 votes – or 1.4% of voters – on Monday’s turnout. With heavy rains forecast for the rest of the week, weekend, and next week – effectively the entire voting period that ends with Election Day next Tuesday – this does not bode well for candidates hoping for easy wins due to high favorable turnout.
Whether Republican or Democrat, this runoff is for certain high-stakes primary races in both parties; the winners of these top-two runoffs will advance to the general ‘midterm’ election in November. On the GOP ticket, voters will select between Ken Paxton and John Cornyn for United States Senator, Chip Roy and Mayes Middleton for Attorney General, Jim Wright and Bo French for Railroad Commissioner, and Thomas Smith and Alison Fox for Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 3. On the Democratic Party ticket, voters will choose for their candidates between Vikki Goodwin and Marcos Isaias Velez for Lieutenant Governor, and Nathan Johnson and Joe Jaworski for Attorney General.
Woodlands Online reminds voters that early voting is more convenient, with multiple locations to choose from, than waiting until the single Election Day, when they would have to make it to their precinct polling location, frequently not close to a person’s place of employment.
