THE WOODLANDS – As the season rolls on, some key district matchups still carry major playoff implications. This week, the College Park Cavaliers host the Conroe Tigers in one of those matchups, with both teams fighting to hold onto a top-4 district spot. College Park is coming off a big win over Cleveland, 56-0. Conroe is coming off a big win as well, beating Caney Creek 63-7 and setting a new season high in total points. With both teams at 2-1 in district play, the winner could put themselves right in the middle of that tight playoff race.

College Park Cavaliers: Fighting To Stay Alive

The 2026 season has not been kind to the Cavaliers, as they currently sit at 3-3. They still have a couple of games left to prove themselves, and a 2-1 district record puts the team in control of its own destiny for the rest of the season. If this offense can be more than a flash in the pan, the Cavaliers could be a scary team in the playoffs and salvage a season that feels lost at the moment.

On paper, this offense has the makings of a district contender, with talent up and down the roster capable of making big-time plays. Chief among them is QB Camden Hughes, who has had an up-and-down 2026 season. So far this season, Hughes has amassed 685 passing yards and 10 TDs at 52% efficiency. The lower passing yards can mostly be attributed to bad injury luck early in the season, but hopefully that’s in the past. When he is on the field, he’s shown flashes of greatness, as against Willis, where he threw for 202 yards and 5 TDs in a crushing victory. Other games, though, like against Cy-Fair and The Woodlands, saw the passing attack shut down, which can cause problems. If Hughes can come into this game strong, the Cavaliers have a good shot to win.

Along with Hughes in the backfield, the Cavaliers boast one of the best RB rooms in the district, capable of breaking off big plays at any moment. RBs Duke Stephens and Antonio Booker deliver a powerful 1-2 punch that can leave teams scrambling. Stephens has had a solid season, recording 650 yards and 7 TDs on the ground, while Booker is close behind at 363 yards and 4 TDs. Stephens is likely to break off a big run almost every game, so if he’s rolling, this rush game is something to fear.

In the WR room, Julian Cromartie stands out. The Clemson commit leads the team in almost every major category, with 20 catches for 448 yards and 6 TDs. His presence alone is enough to make any DB shiver, but that hasn’t stopped some. When Cromartie is shut down, this passing attack can struggle. Other guys like Brian Snodgrass and Nik Ensminger have stepped up as solid 2nd options, but Cromartie is the main target and will be the key to a Cavalier win.

The defense, despite some blowout losses, hasn’t been the worst. They’ve struggled in some games, but that’s mostly due to offensive issues that leave them on the field for much of the game. Players like Brandon Claybaugh, James Cabarrus, and Lucas Richard have had big moments and are key to this defense's success. The Cavalier defense has shown it can shut down opposing offenses, as against Willis, but games like those against The Woodlands and King raise some questions about how they will perform. If the offense can keep them off the field and well rested, this defense can fly, but too much time on the field can clip their wings.

Conroe Tigers: Clawing Their Way Into Contention

We haven’t talked much about the Conroe Tigers this season, but they are finally entering the meat of their schedule. Like their opponents, the Tigers had a rough non-district slate, getting crushed by both King and Waller in blowout fashion. They pulled it together for district play, though, taking down Oak Ridge and Caney Creek in the last 2 weeks, giving them new life in district playoff contention. A win here against the Cavaliers would go a long way for this program and could vault them into one of those 4 playoff spots.

On offense, the Tigers have always been defined by a balanced run game, and that’s no different here. RBs Jamai Dawson and Louis Jessie have combined for almost 1000 yards on the ground, with Dawson leading the charge with 521 yards and 5 TDs. Jessie is right behind him, as the sophomore has amassed 447 yards and 7 TDs, rounding out a run game that is very similar to their opponents’. Dawson has also shown some skills as a pass catcher, catching 9 passes for 160 yards and 2 TDs, which ranks 2nd in receiving yards. Conroe is all about chipping away at opponents, and if these 2 can do their thing, it’s going to be hard for the Cavalier defense to get in their way.

The pass isn’t completely out of the question, though, as the Tigers’ QB Cameron Nunley has remained solid in the starting role. Nunley has amassed a respectable 703 yards and 7 TDs through the air, and he hasn’t thrown a pick yet this season. His veteran presence is valuable to this team, and there’s no doubt he could go off in any given game. If the run game is shut down, watch out for him through the air.

Catching Nunley’s passes is a job for many players, as this WR room is surprisingly deep. Leading the pack is senior Jackson Taylor, who has caught 13 passes for 242 yards and 3 TDs through 6 games. Right behind him are Josiah Cirilo and Jayion Tarry Walker, both of whom have surpassed the 100-yard mark this season. Cirilo’s 14 catches have netted 140 yards and 3 TDs, while Tarry Walker has recorded 12 catches for 130 yards and 1 TD. Nunley certainly has plenty of options to sling the rock, and any one of them is poised for a big game.

The defense is another part of this team that can have its moments, but it has let up some big plays to opposing offenses. Players like Christopher Gardner, Keino Hopkins, Jacob Baker, Kolbe Evans, and Denzel Haynes can all make plays on the ball. Gardner currently leads the team in tackles (48) and tackles for loss (7), making him one of the strongest points of this defense. The Conroe defense is known for forcing opponents into low-scoring battles, and if they can do that against this Cavalier offense, they could be the key factor in a big-time win.

Final Thoughts

Altogether, this game might be one of the more important matchups in the district. Whoever gets out of this one will be in firm control of that playoff spot, and both teams will be fighting with everything they have. For College Park, a win here could salvage a season that has turned ugly, while Conroe is looking for a season-defining win. This game could also turn into a blowout if one side takes control, but hopefully we get a good game regardless. It’s going to be a good one at Woodforest Bank Stadium this Friday, and we can’t wait to see it.
