Conroe ISD to Follow State Direction to Display Ten Commandments Under Senate Bill 10
CONROE, TX -- Following updated guidance from the Office of the Texas Attorney General that the injunctions preventing implementation have been vacated, Conroe Independent School District will install Ten Commandments displays in classrooms as required by Senate Bill 10. The district expects to complete installation in the coming weeks.
Passed by the Texas Legislature in 2025, Senate Bill 10 requires public elementary and secondary schools to display the Ten Commandments in each classroom according to specifications established in Texas Education Code § 1.0041.
On April 21, 2026, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit upheld Senate Bill 10 in Nathan v. Alamo Heights Independent School District, rejecting challenges under the First Amendment’s Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses.
Conroe ISD previously installed the required displays and later removed them in compliance with a court order in separate litigation involving the district. The attorney general’s office has now advised the district to proceed with installing compliant displays following the removal of the legal restrictions.
“Conroe ISD has followed state law and court orders throughout this process,” said Misty Odenweller, President of the Conroe ISD Board of Trustees. “We will continue to fulfill those responsibilities as we move forward under the updated guidance.”
“Our staff will coordinate installation to ensure the displays meet the requirements of Senate Bill 10,” said Dr. David Vinson, Superintendent of Conroe ISD. “Our focus remains on serving our students and supporting our campuses.”
The district will continue to monitor legal developments and follow applicable law and court orders.
