At 13-years old, Robert Carter was placed in foster care when his mother, the single parent of nine children and struggling with addiction, couldn’t care for them. The pain of fighting to provide for and being separated from his siblings stayed with him into adulthood. After aging out of the foster care system at 18, Carter took custody of his sister and, at 21, became guardian for his 13-year-old brother. Nearly two decades after entering the foster care system, Carter became a foster parent himself. Realizing that the three boys in his care had been separated from their sisters, he knew his family needed to grow.
