Shining a Light on Youth Mental Health
October is dedicated to raising awareness about youth depression and mental health. In 2021, approximately 3.2 million adolescents in the U.S. experienced at least one major depressive episode according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Sadly, only about 41% received treatment. Early intervention is crucial to prevent long-lasting effects on their well-being.
Youth mental health is a growing concern, as depression can impact academic performance, social connections, and overall health. Programs like those at YES to YOUTH offer vital resources, including crisis intervention, counseling, and family support. Recognizing signs of depression—such as irritability, loss of interest in activities, changes in sleep, and social withdrawal—is essential for getting help.
This month, we encourage everyone to shine a light on youth mental health. By spreading awareness, offering support, and fostering a community where young people feel safe reaching out, we can make a difference and ensure no child faces these struggles alone.
