From all of us at Lawn Ranger, we want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! As the holiday season wraps us in cheer, it’s also a great time to enjoy family, friends, and a little extra time in your garden.

Even in mild Southeast Texas winters, tropical plants like cannas, gingers, caladiums, and amaryllis need a little extra protection when temperatures dip into the 20s. While roots generally survive, frost can damage the exposed parts of your plants.

Top Winter Plant Care Tips:

  • Mulch: Apply 2–3 inches in flower beds and 3–6 inches around shrubs to insulate roots and crowns. Shredded pine mulch or pine straw works best.

  • Cover vulnerable plants: Use canvas or fabric—avoid plastic—to shield delicate foliage during cold snaps. A small frame with a gentle heat source, like a light bulb, can boost protection.

  • Get festive: Wrapping tropicals with miniature Christmas lights can provide a touch of warmth and holiday cheer!

Lawn Tips: Cooler weather reduces watering needs. Check soil moisture to keep lawns healthy, but remember flowers and tropical plants may need a little extra care.
