Fall Lawn & Garden Care Tips for The Woodlands

Relief from the blazing Texas summer is finally in sight - or at least we hope so! As September rolls in, temperatures should begin to dip, making it the perfect time to give your lawn and garden some much-needed attention. St. Augustine turf, which often slows down during the heat of summer, will soon pick up growth again. That means it’s time to refresh your lawn care routine to ensure a lush, healthy yard this fall and beyond.

Turf & Lawn Care

If you noticed dead patches in your lawn this summer - often caused by chinch bugs - it’s time to repair them. Remove the dead grass, rake the area clean, and replace with fresh sod for an “instant lawn.” Sod not only fills in the bare spots quickly but also helps prevent weeds from taking over. By spring, you’ll be glad you took action now.

Keep an eye out for fall pests like armyworms and sod webworms, which chew grass blades and can damage turf quickly. If you spot signs of these caterpillars, treat immediately with products labeled for sod webworm control.

Brown Patch Fungus

As night temperatures cool, St. Augustine lawns become vulnerable to Brown Patch Fungus -especially in areas that tend to stay damp. If you dealt with Brown Patch last year, chances are it could return in the same spots. The best defense is a preventative fungicide treatment before the problem spreads. Lawn Ranger Company’s Green Lawn System is designed to help protect and strengthen your lawn during this season.

Watering Wisely

Even though cooler days are coming, your lawn still needs water. The key is balance - avoid overwatering, which creates the perfect environment for fungus. After a good rain, hold off several days before watering again. The goal is to keep the soil moist about 6 inches deep without keeping it soggy.

Flowers & Perennials

September is a transition month for flower beds. It’s too late for warm-season annuals and a little too early for cool-season ones. If you have bare areas, mulch them and wait a few weeks before planting your fall color.

For perennials, it’s still too hot to divide most, but you can divide daylilies and iris (including Louisiana iris) now. If you come across salvias at local nurseries, go ahead and plant them - they’ll reward you with beautiful blooms well into December.

Roses

Don’t put the watering can away just yet! Roses still need regular care to thrive. Keep them watered, watch for pests, and enjoy the reward - some of the most stunning rose blooms of the year appear in the next two months.

Shrubs

Many common pests are still active as we shift into fall. Be on the lookout for:

  • Whiteflies on gardenias

  • Lacebugs on azaleas

  • Scale on camellias, hollies, and euonymus

  • Aphids on oleanders

Prompt treatment will help keep your shrubs healthy and vibrant as we move into the cooler season.
