Habitat for Humanity 'Women Build' project raises the walls

CONROE, Texas – Habitat for Humanity Montgomery County ‘raised the walls’ on their inaugural 'Women Build' home project Saturday, January 12, in Habitat's Cedar Creek neighborhood.

Sponsoring organization volunteer teams raised 36 exterior and interior walls one at a time, in a kind of old-fashion barn raisin’.

Sponsoring groups participating included Anadarko Petroleum, HEB, Centerpoint Energy, The Woodlands United Methodist Church Women’s Ministries, Service Corp. International and Baker One Design.

‘Women Build’ is about building a home with a focus on promoting women as leaders and providing an opportunity for them to learn new trades or skills under the direction of both men and women skilled leaders. It is about spirit,empowerment, solidarity, fun, learning and a whole lot of pride in working with afamily to build a place they can call home.

“The women’s initiative has become popular internationally,” said Barbara McGregor,the Event Chair for ‘Women Build.’ “Over 1900 homes have been built by women just nationwide.”

Habitat for Humanity Montgomery County is a volunteer-based chartered affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.

“Over the duration of the project, which will take from January 12 to May 11, there will be between 300 and 500 volunteers working on the home,” said McGregor. “They’ll be working three Saturdays in January, and at least two Saturdays a month thereafter, and including some weekdays.”

The January 12th event was for the ‘Raise the Walls' Sponsors; July 19 will involve IWowWe.com and WWTA. January 26 is open registration for other women in the community who wish to participate.Habitat’s mission is to eliminate poverty housing by building decent, affordable homes in partnership with hardworking local families in need.
