MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- Recently Karen Roberts, (right) Owner of Kidville-The Woodlands, hosted a Backpack Drive for the Montgomery County Food Bank. “When we began to look for a way to serve our community, helping provide adequate food to support a child is obviously of great importance,” Roberts said.

Undernourished children are very vulnerable, cannot learn at school, and their brain development is compromised. In 2012 nearly 650 backpacks were distributed and refilled weekly to students in need. Projections for 2013 are even higher.

“Academically and physically these children are just not up to par when hungry,” Andrea Raiford said, Director of Volunteers & Community Affairs. “The Buddy Backpack program feeds nearly 650 kids weekly in Montgomery County. We’re always in need of backpacks and non-perishable food, especially at this time of the year. This program is a vital resource for very needy children in our county.”

Stats:

One in six households in Montgomery County does not know when their next meal is coming or where it will come from.

The Backpack program discreetly sends 7-10 pounds of nutritious food home each Friday tucked in the backpacks of these needy children. The backpack is returned to school every Monday and volunteers refill them for the next Friday.

48 food pantries serve 40,000 people within the county per month.

Food donations are welcomed at the Montgomery County Food Bank located at 111 South 2nd Street in Conroe.
