THE WOODLANDS, Texas - The College Park Lady Cavaliers varsity soccer team proved endurance and diligence in their scrimmage against the Cy-Fair Bobcats on Friday, January 23.

The Cavaliers defeated the Bobcats 3-0, holding a tight back-line and attacking with force throughout the game. Maria Rossi, the Lady Cavs’ midfielder , scored in the 14th-minute of the game, with an assist from Andrea Santa Cruz. This was followed by multiple attacks by College Park in the final third, including another dangerous attack by Rossi in the 19th-minute along the right side.

Cy-Fair retaliated with a dangerous attack in response to Rossi’s, and in the 20th-minute received a free kick in the final third due to a College Park handball right outside the 18-yard box. The ball was kicked just wide of the goal post, and allowed the Lady Cavs to regain possession through a goal kick and take the ball back to the middle third.

Lady Cavs’ goalkeeper Grace Johnson maintained a strong defensive stance, making several saves and inhibiting the Bobcats from scoring a goal, including a diving save 7:00 into the first half. The Cavaliers led the Bobcats 1-0 at half time.

The second half started with an early foul by Cy-Fair, which allowed College Park to get a shot within the first six minutes. The shot went wide, but College Park’s Amanda Miller returned with a shot and goal from the left side of the final third in the 11th minute of the second half, bringing the Cavaliers up by two goals.

The Bobcats continued with attacks, but were quickly shut down by the Cavalier defense. Center defender Candace Sims continually made a strong impact, intercepting and clearing balls played into the center of the final third. Goalkeeper Grace Johnson made a noteworthy save early in the second half as well, blocking a 1-on-1 by stretching out and getting behind a problematic shot.

Andrea Santa Cruz of College Park finished up the game with a goal within the last three minutes, bringing the final score of the game 3-0, with the Cavaliers prevailing over the Bobcats.

“I feel like the girls have been working really hard and things finally came together for them tonight. The played as a team and every person that got on the field left it out there for us, and I feel like they just had a great game, they really put things together tonight,” College Park head coach Meredith Cook said of her team’s performance.

College Park opens district play at home on Tuesday, January 27, against Atascoctia at 7:00 p.m.
