THE WOODLANDS, Texas - Woodlands Eco Realty founder and chairman Priyanka Johri believes there’s a difference between being environmentally conscious and being an environmentalist to the extreme. Living sustainably, she says, means use resources in a responsible fashion.

She believes in practical Sustainability. “I don’t believe we need to go back to a cave in order to protect the environment,” Johri, formerly a petroleum geologist with Shell Oil, says. “If we wanted to live like that we would have stayed there, and not progressed.

“Human beings can’t be comfortable if we try to sacrifice everything,” Johri continues. “We can live comfortably, but we don't have to misuse or waste our resources. We still have a responsibility to our future generations.”

A certified eco broker and ecological designer, Johri knows that even the smallest lifestyle tweak can help Woodland Eco Realty’s buyers and sellers live not only more sustainably, but also enhance the quality of their lives and their pocket books. From conserving water and energy, to healthy cleaning products to eating fresh with your very own home grown fresh produce.

Johri doesn't just ‘talk the talk’ of the benefits of sustainable living. She maintains a home garden in her own backyard, growing a variety of fresh produce including cucumbers and tomatoes. But even the smallest home in a high-rise condominium can accommodate a garden, she says. One of her clients maintains a home garden in containers on her apartment balcony.

“There are lots and lots of vegetables that are suitable for container gardening,” Johri says. “You can always have herbs from your garden. Just put them on your windowsills, and get regular clippings. If you have a little bit bigger space, like a backyard, you can go bigger. It’s not that difficult.”

Community gardening, with plots ranging in size from a few select edibles in a container to massive rooftop spreads, has become more and more prevalent in recent years. According to the USDA, approximately fifteen percent of the world’s food supply is currently grown in urban centers.

Johri’s expertise in urban gardening extends beyond her client roster. She helped design the community gardens for the original Montgomery County Food Bank and tranquility garden for the Montgomery county's women shelter. Maintained by volunteers, the food garden featured two dozen raised planting beds, providing fresh fruits and vegetables for community residents.

Johri currently provides eco-positive consultation to her clients, free of charge. From rain water harvestation to updating the home for energy and water savings to save money and resources to what kind of materials can be used in updating or building a home...... This valuable information helps them convert homes into a more sustainable living space, saving water, energy and money.
