EFHou backs State Rep. Donna Howard (D-Austin) regarding feminine hygiene products

HOUSTON, TX -- State Rep. Donna Howard (D-Austin) believes that feminine hygiene products should be exempt from sales tax and has filed HB 311, according to a recent Texas Standard interview.

“It’s not a huge amount of money for many of us, but when you’re on a limited income, and you have your family’s food and rent to pay, just to find the extra 10 bucks for a box of tampons can be a drain on the family budget,” Howard said.

Many women across the state do not have access to feminine hygiene products, including tampons, sanitary napkins and pads, menstrual cups or other products used primarily for feminine hygiene during menstruation.

That is especially true for women in homeless shelters, poor women or women going through difficult times.

The United States Interagency Council on Homelessness estimates that on any given day in Texas, there are 25,210 people experiencing homelessness. Thirty-nine percent of those experiencing homelessness were women or girls, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Endometriosis Foundation is collecting feminine hygiene products to donate to area women's shelters. Let women know that you care about them by donating at one our area drop-off locations listed below.
