THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Many of us have been taken aback especially when a co-worker or employee blurts out that she or he has cancer. The fear and the weight of the moment, the unbelievable thoughts of ‘is this really happening,’ she is so young, he has a family and young kids, and now this. That empty feeling is most often followed by – What can I do??

Presenting Sponsor Waste Connections encourages other local companies to sponsor and participate in the team focused event to support their employees

The American Cancer Society has always been a go-to organization for support and resources dealing with cancer. And Relay For Life The Woodlands on April 13, 2019, taking place in front of the new Marriott Spring City Place is an event where many people are coming together for one cause – to get rid of cancer.

Rebecca Winburn, ACS Senior Manager, Community Development said, “Relay For Life The Woodlands continually has a huge impact on the lives of those people who have been touched by cancer. It is a time to shout, to cry, to support and push yourself to do something more. And it is a lot of fun with many meaningful activities throughout the day. And yes this is a fundraiser because the more we raise, the more people we can save. We hope to get a lot of people coming out to support us.”

Sue Netherton, Vice President of People, Training & Development at Waste Connections, this year’s Presenting Sponsor, knows first-hand the feelings of those weighted shoulders when a colleague told her she had breast cancer. And unfortunately, in her position, she has experienced that feeling more than once throughout her tenure at the company.

“In this situation our employees are looking for support when they or a co-worker, friend, or family member has just been diagnosed with cancer,” noted Netherton. “This is why we are so passionate about our participation in the ACS Relay for Life The Woodlands, and why Waste Connections wanted to be the presenting sponsor. This is our way of supporting all of our co-workers who are somehow touched and dealing with this disease, it is a way of honoring our survivors by joining together to lift our team and ourselves up . . . to do something!”

She continued, “We want to encourage other companies to sponsor and help support their own employees by participating in this inspiring team event to lead the fight for a cancer free world. It is a motivating and highly emotional experience that is so appreciated!”

The American Cancer Society is able to save lives by helping people stay well and get well by finding cures and by fighting back through Education, Service, Research and Advocacy.

Every one of us has been touched by cancer in some way. Friends, relatives, caregivers, and survivors - we all use our special passion to help the American Cancer Society save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.
