THE WOODLANDS, TX – With a firm commitment to further extend education on human rights, Pablo Flower, a senior at The John Cooper School, and alumna Demme Durrett (’15), who graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University last May, were selected to represent the United States as Youth Ambassadors to the 16th Annual International Human Rights Summit that was held in New York City in late June.

Youth Delegates from over 40 nations met and networked with non-governmental organization representatives, members of civil society, ambassadors and representatives of UN permanent missions, government officials and representatives of nonprofits from around the world.

The three-day summit, attended by guests from 78 nations, focused on the importance of communities working together to resolve human rights abuses through education in the 30 Articles of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Durrett was a featured speaker at the summit again this year and gave an update on the human rights activities she worked on this past year, which ranged from multiple meetings with the President of Malta to bring a human rights education program to their country, to meeting Pope Francis. Durrett is currently working for the United States Mission to the United Nations in New York City.

Both Durrett and Flower have been committed to educating others about human rights for many years through the non-profit organization, Youth for Human Rights-USA that was founded by Durrett in 2013. Flower joined the effort five years ago and serves as the Student Director of the Human Rights Walk and Festival.

The 2019 Human Rights Day Celebration will be held on December 7 in Town Green Park in The Woodlands. Flower, who is actively involved in numerous Montgomery County outreach efforts, encourages students from area schools as well as community members to become involved in the 9th Annual Human Rights Walk and Festival. Human rights-related non-profit organizations are encouraged to participate. For more information go to www.humanrightswalk.com.
