KLEIN, TX -- District 15-6A is a tough district, it’s also a wacky district. On any night, you can see close games and crazy plays, making this district a war zone for the entirety of the regular season. So, when first-place Klein Oak escapes with a 9-7 win at home over sixth place College Park, no one is overly surprised.

Despite the loss, the College Park defensive unit was the star of the game. Coming into Saturday night’s game, Klein Oak averaged over 28 points per game and hasn’t scored less than 17 points all year. College Park held an exciting offense featuring one of the district’s most effective duo’s in QB Montrell Bolton and WR Dwight McGlothern to just seven points, while also forcing three turnovers on the night.

The Cavalier defense forced their first turnover late in the first quarter when defensive lineman Andrew Edmonson forced and recovered a Klein Oak fumble. After the Cavs missed a field goal to start the second quarter, the CP defense stepped up once again to force another fumble, this time recovered by linebacker Dylan Hazen.

On the first Klein Oak possession of the game, Bolton and McGlothern connected for a 68-yard TD pass that was negated by a holding penalty. With 4:31 remaining in the half, they struck again, this time for a 48-yard score that counted. Cavaliers DB Curt Evangelister blocked a field goal at the end of the quarter to make McGlothern’s touchdown the only score of the first half.

Evangelister made another clutch play late in the third quarter to keep Klein Oak off the scoreboard once again. The junior safety won a jump ball at the goal line for College Park’s third takeaway of the game.

Two minutes into the fourth quarter, College Park would finally find the end zone. QB Ty Buckmon found a wide-open Hudson Ildebrando for a 59-yard touchdown pass. The game remained tied at seven until a special teams mishap would decide the game late in the fourth quarter.

With under five minutes to play, College Park lined up to punt in their own territory. A high snap soared over the head of the punter into the end zone. The last-gasp attempt to punt the ball away was knocked out of the back of the end zone for a safety.

The two points would break the tie and give Klein Oak the win. Just like Klein Collins the night before, Klein Oak escaped a loss and clinched a playoff spot due to special teams. The Panthers will head into their bye week with a 6-1 district record, while College Park falls to 2-4 and hosts Klein Cain next week.
