Sports Weekend Review: 4/23-25

THE WOODLANDS, TX -- This past weekend provided a ton of championship-quality moments across multiple sports. From Track competing for a trip to state, Softball getting ready for the playoffs, and much more. Here’s what went down over the weekend:

Baseball

Grand Oaks 3, The Woodlands 2

All the scoring was done in just one inning in this one. Sloan Laird doubled to right field to bring two runs across the plate in the bottom of the third. The RBI gave the Grizzlies the lead and the win on Saturday.

Grand Oaks (10-3) stays in first place in District 13-6A with two games to go. Willis and second-place Oak Ridge will be their final two games of the regular season.

Oak Ridge 9, Willis 1

Seth Henry led the way as the War Eagles cruised to the win. Henry’s performance of 3-3 with two RBIs at the plate helped Oak Ridge win their fourth straight game.

The War Eagles (9-4) are heating up at the right time, and they’ll need to stay hot in order to have a chance of winning the district title. College Park and Grand Oaks are the final two games on the regular-season schedule.

College Park 13, Conroe 1

The Cavaliers put up nine runs in the first inning and never looked back. Hank Hudson and Carter Gorling were the leading hitters, each going 2-3 on the day. Hudson added two RBIs to his stat line, while Gorling put in work on the mound. Gorling struck out eight batters in 4.2 innings.

College Park is currently tied with The Woodlands at 8-5 with two games to go. The Cavs will face Oak Ridge and The Woodlands to end the regular season.

Softball

Oak Ridge 6, Grand Oaks 3

The home run ball carried the District 13-6A champion War Eagles to the season-series sweep of their rivals. Kaitlynn Martinez and Hailey Busshart went yard in the Saturday afternoon victory.

Both teams will advance to the UIL 6A playoffs. Oak Ridge will take on Aldine MacArthur and Grand Oaks will meet Spring in the bi-district round.

The Woodlands 20, College Park 1

The Woodlands lit up up the scoreboard and forced the mercy rule after three innings. Kiara Wiedenhaupt led the team with two hits and four RBIs.

As the third-place team in District 13-6A, The Woodlands will face Dekaney in the bi-district round of the playoffs.

Wrestling

College Park brought home three gold medals from the state championship meet on Saturday. Brittyn Cobishley, Olivia DeGeorgio, and Jonathan Wertz claimed titles to helo the Cavaliers finish in fourth as a team in the girls’ division, and third in the boys’ division.

Cobishley and DeGeorgio picked up their second gold medal in the careers, while Wertz is the first winner for the CP boys team.

Track

The Woodlands Boys team won the team championship at the Region II 6A meet in Waco on Saturday. College Park followed in second place by three points.

Individually, Joshua English (1:51.58) and Kyle Easton (1:54.26) advanced to state in the 800-meter run. In the high jump, Turey Stoudemire advanced to state with a winning jump of 6-08. Mitchell Blakeslee took gold to advance to state in the discus with a throw of 168-08.

College Park’s 4x400-meter relay featuring Aidan Johnson, Marcus Scott, Joshua Ahasan, and Connor Washington took gold with a time of 3:13.74. Washington also golds in the 100 (10.2) and the 200 (20.46).

Conroe’s Shamar Levenstone advanced to state in the 110-meter hurdles with a second-place time of 14.06.

On the girls’ side, Conroe’s Lilly Rodel took first place in the shot put (42-03.5), while Oak Ridge’s Angelina Sahagun advanced with a second-place throw of 41-06. Rodel also qualified in the discus with a second-place throw of 142-03. Kendall Starika took gold for Oak Ridge with a throw of 143-09.
