THE WOODLANDS, TX - We sat down with music artist Davy Knowles to learn about his successful career and the upcoming September 30 concert at Dosey Doe Big Barn. Davy is an incredible blues guitarist and singer/songwriter. He was born on a small island in the Irish Sea called Isle of Man. This little island situated between England, Scotland and Ireland was the launching point for his love of music and his career as an accomplished entertainer.

Davy Knowles Background

Davy told us that when he was young, his dad was a huge music fan and musician and had built a fabulous record collection at home. In that collection, his dad played “Sultans of Swing” by Dire Straits. Davy loved their sound and wanted to be a part of that flair and to play the guitar. It was really that group and song that gave him the desire to pursue music. Davy picked up his dad’s guitar and taught himself how to play. He loved music and was really into the British blues boom at the time and enjoyed artists like John Mayall, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and Rory Gallagher.

When asked about his experience living on the Isle of Man, Davy told us - “The Isle of Man was a great place to grow up with a great musical community. I've been playing around the island since I was probably about 13. There were just fabulous places to play, a really nurturing environment and then I really wanted to start my own thing. I've always been a fan of songwriters and I've always wanted to write and I wanted an outlet for that so some friends and I got together and formed a band that was probably when I was about 15 or 16.”

The new band was called Back Door Slam and was formed in 2003. When asked about the start of that band and how they gained prominence in the music industry, Davy told us -

“There was a wonderful promoter on the island by the name of Lenny Conroy, and Lenny put us with major acts that were coming to the island to be their opening band. He really helped us and we then we managed to get a recording deal with an American company. They flew us out to Austin for the South by Southwest Festival in 2007, and that went really well and it kind of rocketed forward from there.”

According to his website - Davy Knowles first burst onto the scene in 2007 with his band ‘Back Door Slam’, garnering rave reviews, national US television appearances (Jimmy Kimmel Live, Good Morning America), extensive triple-A radio airplay, and two top 5 Billboard Blues charting albums.  Since then, Knowles has independently released two more studio albums, 2014’s ‘The Outsider’ and 2016’s ‘Three Miles From Avalon’, which also hit the top 5 on the Billboard Blues chart.  An EP, ‘1932’, showcasing his talents on acoustic guitar, specifically a 1932 National acoustic guitar, was released in early 2017.

Davy Knowles also has a new album coming out in Oct 22 called “What Happens Next”.

About Dosey Doe

This 165 year old historical structure has been saved for its current purpose. Originally built as a tobacco barn in Kentucky, the 300-600 year old growth oak and birch massive beams are the foundation not only for a beautiful room for also for great acoustics. It is a place where memories are made. No need to run from restaurant to music hall, as here you have it all.

Their entrees are 'cooked from scratch' based on the season, special offerings of purveyors with the type of music of the night in mind. Their task is to offer a meal that would be the reason in and of itself to visit Dosey Doe. The presentation is note worthy and the creations are featured in several Cook Books from Canada to Texas.

Nationally recognized artists from around the world dominate the calendar here: from Jerry Jeff Walker to The Rippingtons, Dave Mason to Lee Roy Parnell, Clint Black to Bela Fleck, Leon Russell to Spyro Gyra, Steve Wariner to Hayes Carll, Roger Creager to Mel Tillis, Manhattan Transfer to Gallagher... up very close and personal. Most artists will stay to have photos taken and give autographs after the show. Many very rarely do it anywhere but here and almost everyone says it is one of their favorite rooms to play.

'I have played them all, big and small, but I have never played a place that sounds as good as Dosey Doe!' - Gary P Nunn

'I will gladly tell anyone that Carnegie Hall cannot compete with Dosey Doe,' - Michael Martin Murphy

'One of my all time top 5 places to have played,' - Marcia Ball

Come early and enjoy the room. Filled with Americana artifacts from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, there is plenty to see. Your hands touching the hand-hewn 2000 lb barn beams, your eyes filled with art, artifacts, signage from a simpler time, your taste buds excited from salad to dessert, and music so pure - up close and personal... all designed to 'Take You Away' and create a memory you will keep.

The BIG BARN is home to great causes such as RETT and SWING FOR A CURE; benefits where proceeds go to help children's illnesses. The BIG BARN is available for large wedding receptions, corporate functions, birthdays and anniversary parties.
