THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Coming off a huge playoff run, The Woodlands used that momentum to start the 2022-2023 Volleyball season with some wins. After a couple of scrimmages and tournaments, The Woodlands Highlanders hosted the College Station Cougars in a non-district home opener. College Station, who went first in their district, is also coming off of a huge playoff run from last year and needs that momentum to try and beat The Woodlands.

In the first set the Highlanders seemed to be a little rocky, allowing a couple of kills past their defense but they quickly tightened up and started to defend the Cougar attacks. The set was even throughout the first half but The Woodlands began to pull away as they caught their rhythm back. The new faces of the team blended in and seemed as though they had been playing with the members who came back from last year. They were able to win this set 25-17.

The second set started once again very even as both teams used their defense to keep the rallies going. It was only a couple of errors and balls going out of bounds that put points on the board for each team. Makenzie Weddel, Marjorie Johnson and Claire DeWine all had some incredible kills that got The Woodlands the lead and eventually the second set win.

After a huge second set win, The Woodlands came out once again with the momentum carried on from last set. College Station was able to stop a couple of the attacks with some incredible defense, but in the end The Woodlands would use the pressure to stack up the points. With another round of rallies, College Station would give The Woodlands a run for their money. They would some how return and block some huge spikes from The Woodlands and chalk up a couple of points on the boards from them.

In the end The Woodlands would defeat College Station in 3 sets in their home opener. They are set to play another tournament before the district season starts; which brings in a couple of new schools and competition.

Before the match Coach Terri Wade was asked about the new teams coming in and she would go on to say that she is excited for the new competition and can’t wait to see what each team has to offer. It fills in the schedule nicely and doesn’t give any off time which allows the girls to get cold.
