WILLIS, TX – The Willis Wildkats hosted the Conroe Tigers on Friday in a game that almost ended Conroe’s postseason hopes, which were all but dashed by Willis. Willis’s offense looked much improved in this game, avoiding the slow start they had against New Caney. The defense limited Conroe to just 10 points, with Conroe’s only TD coming late in the 2nd half. Another solid win for Willis as they beat the Tigers 31-10 and now look ahead to their final two games against Oak Ridge and Grand Oaks.

IT WASN’T VERY CLOSE IN THIS ONE, AS WILLIS CLAIMS ANOTHER WIN OVER STRUGGLING CONROE

Willis Wildkats: Taking Care of Business

Once again, Willis proved why they are still a formidable team within the district. They are now 5-1 in district play, almost securing that second playoff spot. They handled business in this game, scoring 31 points and limiting Conroe to just 3 points through three quarters. Jermaine Bishop Jr. had another strong performance, totaling 100 yards receiving and intercepting a pass on defense. That interception might have been one of the best plays of the night, as it was a 90-yard pick-six that Bishop high-pointed over the receiver for. However, that was Bishop’s only score of the night, as he nearly scored on a big-time throw from Lincoln Frazier, but the ball was punched out at the goal line and recovered by Conroe. His only other notable play was when a bad snap on a punt left him defenseless against the swarming Conroe punt unit. Speaking of Frazier, he bounced back well after his rough game at New Caney. Frazier threw for 322 yards, completing 19 of 32 passes with 2 touchdowns. One of those touchdowns went to Jaivion Martin, who made an impressive run after a screen pass to score, running over multiple defenders on his way to the end zone. Another positive development was the involvement of RB Jamarcus Williams, who scored two touchdowns. Williams finished with 132 all-purpose yards, playing both RB and WR, and looked better than he has all season. It was good to see Willis finally run the ball more, and while Williams is only a sophomore, he’s fast and could be a threat moving forward. As mentioned before, the defense also scored a defensive touchdown thanks to Bishop and recovered a fumble deep in their own territory. They managed to contain Conroe’s rushing attack for the most part, which was a concern before the game, and they held up well as the game progressed. Overall, this is another step in the right direction for Willis as they keep racking up wins.

Conroe Tigers: Another Tough Defeat

It's been a tough season for the Conroe Tigers so far. After making it to the postseason last year with a 9-3 record, Conroe has struggled to meet that level, now sitting at 2-3 in the district. This game wasn’t particularly memorable, as their offense just can't seem to score consistently. QB Cameron Nunley threw the aforementioned pick-six and was less effective through the air than you'd hope. The offense's only points at halftime came from a field goal that was set up by a questionable pass interference call that put them in scoring position. In the third quarter, they looked ready to score, driving into Willis territory, but a fumble cost them the ball and a chance to stay close. They got a “sack” on Bishop, who was punting in the next drive, which was a funny moment, giving them better field position, but they were stopped and missed the field goal. The only touchdown came in the fourth quarter, when the game was already out of reach. RB Alex Spence Myers led a solid drive to the red zone, then punched it in on a 4th-and-goal to finally put points on the board. That momentum didn’t last long, as Willis scored on the next drive to put the game away for good. Overall, it wasn’t an outstanding performance from the Tigers, leaving them in a tough spot for the rest of the season.

Final Thoughts:

It’s been encouraging to see Willis bounce back after that loss a few weeks ago. Even though it sometimes feels like a lost season for them, they are still 5-1 in the district with a great win over The Woodlands. They are nearly assured of a postseason berth, but they shouldn’t overlook a hungry Grand Oaks team they will face to close out the season in two weeks. They will head to Oak Ridge next week, while Conroe hosts Caney Creek. To watch the highlights on Woodlands Online, check them out here.
